2005 Declarations

Post by uncle tom » 16:54 Tue 10 Jul 2007

The following information was gleaned from the infoportwine site
  • Bucheiro
  • Burmester
  • Churchill Gricha
  • Conceito
  • Crasto
  • Croft Roeda
  • Dow Bomfim (added 28-Jun-2016 when seen for sale at Duty Free in Oporto airport)
  • Dow Senhora da Ribeira
  • Ervamoira from Ramos Pinto
  • Fonseca Panascal
  • Fonseca Guimaraens
  • Graham Malvedos (added 20-Jun-2017 when drunk at the Graham Lodge in Oporto)
  • Kopke
  • Krohn Retiro Novo
  • Messias
  • Niepoort
  • Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo
  • Noval Silval
  • Passadouro
  • Pintas
  • Pocas Junior
  • Quevedo
  • Real Companhia Velha (added 28-Jun-2016 when seen for sale at Duty Free in Oporto airport)
  • Real Companhia Velha Quinta das Carvalhas
  • Romaneira
  • Roriz
  • de la Rosa
  • Taylor Terra Feita
  • Taylor Vargellas
  • Vale Dona Maria
  • Ventozelo
  • Vesuvio
  • Vista Alegre (added 27-Sep-2016 when seen on the wine list of the LBV House Hotel)
No sign of Noval (yet) or some of the 'chateau' players like Rosa & Vale Meao. The Symington camp is also looking lean, with no sign of Bomfim, Malvedos or Cavadinha.

Still time for a few more to appear though..!

Tom

This pair will be appearing in my verticals, starting in about twenty years. An interesting comparison.

Taylor have declared Terra Feita and Vargellas for the same year before - I have both from 1996 - we only need to wait another ten years to compare them!

I have both from 1995 as well.

The Symington's have made Bomfim, Malvedos and Cavadinha as well, but are keeping them for late release. I kind of like that principle. It provides ports that are entering their drinking window for the market at a reasonable price.

I believe Vale Meao did make a 2005 VP, but I haven't tasted nor seen it, so I'm not sure. I saw on the FTLOP board that Noval will release a Silval bottling.

I find this very strange.

Many of the shippers have made noises about low yields in 2006 as a result of the hail damage so I would have thought everyone would have popped out a 2005 SQVP just in case 2006 turns out to be as bad (in volume terms) as some were predicting.

2006 is not only disappointing in volume, but also in quality. I've not heard of one producer that was happy with the quality (of port, wine is another story). And barrel samples that I tasted were much leaner than supposed to. That makes it even more strange that not everyone makes a '05. Maybe the quantities were too low for some? Or too many shrivelled grapes?

Any minute now we can expect Tom to resurect his "7" theory

Derek

PS: Given the performance of 05 and 06 it looks like the theory will turn into reality

It does now look likely that '07 will only have to be an average year to get a general declaration, which raises the risk of a weak vintage being declared.

That said, there is a big question mark over the ability of the western economies to avoid a major downturn before declaration time in '09.

It is not hard to envisage an underweight vintage being launched at overweight prices in the spring of '09, only to be followed by a market crash that autumn...

On the other hand, if the markets crash first, even a sterling vintage might fail to get declared..

We shall see!

financial markets consistent with a soft landing

Post by jdaw1 » 13:31 Fri 13 Jul 2007

Pricing in financial markets is consistent with a high probability of nothing worse than a soft landing. The trouble at mill is only in the over-leveraged parts of the credit market. If you care about details, well, ask. But it would be better not to.

Edit: this side-issue continued in 2005 Declarations backlash.

Bit prophetic - No?

Thanks for the additions. Please could you say how you know these ports were released from this vintage? Could you also confirm that the Krohn you've stated is the full blend and not the Retiro Novo that is already on the list?

I bought these wines at Portuguese wine stores in the last 3 years (they rest in my small wine cellar).
This year Khron made VP and SQVP (and, also, LBV and Colheita) - see Wiese & Krohn old website - http://www.krohn.pt/en/?/datedports#vintage - before this centenary company was acquired by Fladgate.
Conceito Vintage was made (winemaker Rita Marques) with grapes from Quinta do Cabido.
