Bottle Watch

While chatting with Glenn and g-man about bottles missing for some offlines, I realized that there were several bottles that kept appearing as "hard to find." So I thought perhaps we'd make a list of hard-to-find bottles (and perhaps indicate the country you're in if they "ought" to be plentiful but aren't) so that we could each keep our eyes open for rarities.

All ’72s are rare.

Somebody has to say it: Nacional 1931 not frequently seen; nor Dow 1878 (which I’m particularly keen to sample).

I can say as of about 2 weeks ago I am now in possession of a 1973 Port. A gift from a Port producer. No idea where this person found it but we opened one and we tried it and I was also given an unopened bottle for me to take home for a later bday. Very thoughtful and nice of the person. It's a 1973 Vinho Velho do Douro "Berco do Vinho do Porto" "Regua" "Garrafeira Particular". I can only gather it came from a property somewhere in or around Regua. It was quite sweet, delicate, and past it's best days but slightly chilled was enjoyable.

I have a few Dow 72 as well as Dow 80. 1972 is not a very good year though, suffering from the alcohol scandal of using synthetic industrial spirit for the fortification (1972-1974). Dow 1972 is one of the better 1972's though.

I also have a few of the, Dow's Quinta do Bomfim 1980, that is much more rare than the Dow 80.

'72 is an odd year - a declaration suddenly interrupted by the alcohol scandal in '74

Yes, I have some '72s - and if anyone needs a Dow or Offley for a tasting I'm happy to oblige..

Visiting the Cruz cellars a couple of years back, Axel P and I found some some neglected pallet cages full of odd Cruz VP's from that period - mostly with decaying labels and adorned with odd cigarette butts..

I've still got a couple of bottles of Rebello Valente 1972 from a whole unopened case I "won" at Christies some years ago.

Haven't got any TNs, but the bottles were all in perfect condition and from memory the contents were pretty good.
