My little two cents:

* What is the definition of a classic year?
* I am missing 2015.
* 1989 and 1978 - get out of here. I have never drank anything fantastic from these years.
* Back to back years 91/92, 82/83?
* I never heard that anyone said 58, 67 or 87 is a classic year. Although fantastic qualities.
* If one argues that a general declaration comes with the quantitiy or the percentage of producers who bottle, how could 11, 17, 31 or 42 be? - Despite the outrageous quality of these years.

No. Just no. Way too generous. I can't imagine a definition of "classic" that would include 1989 but not 2015. 2009, 1992, 1991, 1987, 1982, 1978, 1967, and 1958 are at best arguable (and to varying degrees of arguable). My experience isn't sufficient prior to 1958 to comment, but I suspect there are more that fit the "arguable at best" category (I'm suspicious of 1947, for example).

I don't think I've ever heard someone argue that 1975 is a "classic" year, and it was at least generally declared.

Can you link the source of the table - in case of any helpful surrounding text describing the criteria used to include a year in the table)?
I suspect, given the obvious anomalies, it might simply be "whichever years I thought should be" per some individual?
Perhaps it's intended as "years VP (ignoring SQVP) was produced by at least N producers"?
Depending on N this might allow for '31, '42, '47, though I can't see 1911 or (worse) 1989 whose inclusion must be a mistake.

The fact that this nonsense was produced by the organisation accountable for ensuring the quality of the produce of the Douro is disturbing. This level of incompetence needs to be driven out.

There was no such thing as a "declared or classic year" prior to WW2. People just made VP when they felt it was good enough to sell to someone. The rest is just picking years out of a hat.

2009 is a huge omission - 2015 is also notably missing.
And 1989? - no way - a very minor year..
