Well, the big news this year is just how early the vintage is.

The winter was exceptionally wet, but from November through to May, every month was a little warmer than the long term average. June was slightly cooler however, and the searing temperatures seen elsewhere on the continent do not show up on the Vila Real met records. Portugal as a whole though has had a bad year for fires.

Dirk started harvesting his wine grapes on the tenth of this month, and Oscar tells me that the port grapes will start coming in next week. Most recent reports are saying the grapes are looking good with excellent acidity, although the maturation pattern has been atypical.

- Have we ever seen port grapes picked in August before?
