Drinking in Lisbon

Hi all

I'm off to Lisbon for 5 days in a few weeks with SWMBO; can anyone recommend a good bar/restaurant with some decent ports to drink while we're there? It needs to be a "normal" bar/restaurant with other drinks since the wife doesn't do port and it won't be much fun for her if all she's doing is watching me progressively slide under the table. I'm not bothered about actually buying any bottles since I've heard that Lisbon isn't actually great value for port, but a nice range to sample a glass or 2 is another matter entirely.

Port, or at least any decent variety and range of port, is not that easy to find on wine lists in Lisbon, although there are fantastic restaurants! I have some notes at home that I could check next week when I'm back there...

If you want to try a wide range of ports by various producers by the glass, you should visit the "Solar do vinho do porto":

The staff is not so friendly, but the selection of wines by the glass is really good. Vintage port is not offered by the glass, though.

If you want to try some Portuguese wines, try the "Chafariz do Vinho" wine bar: http://www.chafarizdovinho.com
They will have some port, but their emphasis is clearly on table wines.

My favorite Port place in Lisbon is "Grapes & Bites". It's in the heart of Bairro Alto - which is the perfect part of Lisbon for tourists, anyhow... The selection of wines and especially Port Wines is absolutely nice... When I saw that they have several wines from Andresen on their list, I knew I would love the place. The service is just marvelous. They have a few bottles of real "High-End-Port" - like "Scion" and "Ne Oublie". But also some entry-level ports for normal people... As a fanatic friend of Porto and the Douro I try to spend as little time in Lisbon as possible - but when I'm there, I for sure pay "Grapes & Bites" a visit. I love of course "Vinologia" in Porto - but if you are not a Port-lover, then you feel absolutely lost in that place. "Grapes & Bites" has a great selection of all kinds of Portuguese wines, and a good selection of Tapas - so I believe that your wife will like this place, too. The afternoon is good for wine tasting - the evening is better for eating and to listen to life music.
