My belief, based purely on my own experience, is that the mint -> menthol -> spirit is a spectrum that relates to how well the fortifying spirit has integrated into the port. If well integrated, there is no mint / menthol / alcohol tone on the nose or palate. If reasonably well integrated this can show up as a little mintiness, if slightly less well integrated then a menthol tone and if poorly integrated it just jars with an alcoholic heat that can be quite offputting.

But this is just my personal theory.
