Spirits of the Place

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

At the Good Food Fair on Thursday I met Alison and Mike Williams, who run a wine merchants called Spirits of the Place. They are based in Derby and specialise in importing and selling Port produced by small independent producers and a small range of other wines from northern Portugal. They started up this business when Mike volunteered to go to the Douro Valley to help restore one of the steam trains at Pinhao. They have a really unusual list of products for sale, which includes
  • Quinta de Silval X-dry White
  • Quinta do Infantado dry white
  • Quinta do Estanho white
  • Quinta do Castelinho white
  • Quinta do Castelinho white reserve
  • Quinta das Lamelas rose
  • Quinta de Baldias fine ruby
  • Quinta do Infantado dry ruby
  • Adega Co-operative de Mesao Frio tawny
  • Adega Co-operative de Mesao Frio 10 year old tawny
  • Quinta de Baldias 10 year old tawny
  • Caves Vale de Rodo 20 year old tawny

How wonderful. I visit Derby two or three times a month at the moment - if anyone wants me to pick some of these up then let me know.

An unusual list!

The Lamelas Rose is the best rose I have personally tried - i even purchased a bottle for consumption on the back of a tasting (albeit it remains unconsumed two years later....)

I believe the Baldias 20yr was opened at an event I went to at the Quevedo lodge last year and had a solid fanbase as well (though the marzipan-type sweetness left others unconvinced). But i could be mis-remembering names beginning with "B".

Of late I’ve been enjoying my 20Y tawnies. If somebody with expertise in these unusual bottles could recommend some, then I might avail myself of Flash’s kind offer.

We also have a tasting note on TPF from Ronnie, who was pretty impressed.

Pricing? The obvious google search returns “No results found for +"Spirits of the Place" +Derby.”

Damn. I think I've thrown away the leaflet. I've got an email address that I can dig out tomorrow.

The office is at 4 Hartington Street, Derby, DE23 8EA. You can reach them on 01332 381 819 / 0787 0732 446 or using the email address of spirits at regua dot fsnet dot co dot uk.

I did lose the price list in the recycling yesterday so apologies for not being able to provide any more details on pricing.
