Re: Hung over and alcohol

Are you really serious?? So all those times in college when we were saying ... "We don't get hangovers whenever we get drunk on dom" is really true?! Yup! I originally intended to be a chemist (so how did I become a Producer for games? it's a long story...) and this is something we learne...

Re: Penfold's Grandfather Tawny

It is, however, a nice dessert wine.

I have found numerous Aussie "ports" that are dreadful when consumed as Port, but are in fact quite decent dessert wines if you consume them as such.

Re: Hung over and alcohol

There are two primary causes of hangovers - dehydration and formaldehyde. Dehydration is fairly obvious... if you consume too much alcohol without something to buffer it, you'll get dehydrated and develop a nasty headache. My personal tolerance level seems to be adequately buffered by drinking a gla...

I have a Ferreira 1970 but will have difficulty getting to NYC in November. If I can't make it I'd be willing to swap it to someone for something equivalent for the event, though.

Re: 1992 Vesuvio COLHEITA

Isn’t this more a demand issue? Looking at the IVDP stats, only half as much Colheita is sold as VP, so its not surprising that there are fewer “declarations† for it from the more VP-orientated shippers. I wouldn't think so, but then again I'm not actually in the business and trying to sell Port s...

Re: 1992 Vesuvio COLHEITA

That is an interseting way to look at this Glenn. My own view is that the shippers have more chances to get a Colheita right than they do with a VP. With VP they have one chance to blend and little or no choice over when to remove from wood and bottle so if it is not right first time they have lost...

Re: 1992 Vesuvio COLHEITA

Colheitas are a waste of time, commercially Sad, but probably true. To me the pinnacle of Port production is not a classic VP but rather a classic Colheita. Both require great skill and knowledge to create - the right grapes, a good year, and knowledge of how the Port will age. But VP is too easy -...

Re: Wine shippers

The best way to insure that your baggage is handled properly is to insure it, but that can be expensive. Plus it also makes it more difficult to argue with customs about the value of the contents. Marking it "fragile" makes it a target. Having them mark it "insured" means t...

David,

I will be in Pinhao the nights of the 20th-23rd, and then will be in Porto the nights of the 24th-28th. I'd love to meet you if we're in the same area at the same time!

Re: Awards, Medals and the like

I think I mentioned this on :ftlop: but what seemed particularly inditing about this affair was that :ws: (I’d forgotten we had that graphic!) doesn’t seem to be checking that the wine-list submitted is actually the one being offered by the restaurant. It would be quite easy to imagine a place subm...

Re: Wine shippers

Another improvement for using styro shippers is to insert crumpled newspaper in the bottom and top of each bottle's bin to help absorb shocks and prevent the bottles from breaking out the top (or more usually, the bottom). If the bottles are loose in their bins, then wrap them in sufficient newspape...

Re: Food and Port

I find that chocolate goes much better with Tawny Ports than it does with VP. It does go quite well with some VPs, no doubt about it, but to me it goes well with just about any Tawny.

Pecans also go very well with Port, whether Tawny or Ruby.

Re: Awards, Medals and the like

It wasn't quite that bad. The wine critic did include numerous (read: 15) wines that Wine Spectator had rated exceptionally poorly, but that was in a wine list of 250+ wines. Their response to the "sting" was that they aren't evaluating the restaurant, they're evaluating its wine list. And...

Re: Tasting Notes Section

I think anything with a year - VP, colheita - should be listed oldest first.

And I agree with Derek that 10Y, 20Y, 30Y, 40Y is a natural progression for tawnies with an indication of age.

So I guess that means I don't see a problem with the current sorting... it just works out.

Re: Too Young to Drink?

I agree - wrong question. Are they good to drink today? Yes, absolutely, especially if you like young, immature Ports. Too young to drink? If by that one means that they will improve significantly with time, then yes they are too young to drink. But if by that one means that there's some arbitrary a...

I recently was faced with a choice, with limited funds available to me, would I like 1 bottle of Nacional 1966 or 4 bottles of Fonseca 1966. For me that's not even a choice. No question: 4 x F66 >>> 1 x NN66. What if you could find someone who was willing to pony up more then you paid for your F66 ...
