Re: Mon 24th April - Bring a Bottle
Lightweight! I am ≈164.87212707% for this dinner❢ I am so for this dinner, that I am irrationally for this dinner❗ It seems like Julian's been on the ecstasy again; we might need to get to the root of it. Perhaps the power of a couple of imaginary pies might restore his one-ness, even if it leaves ...

Re: Old Reading Abbey Brand
The main unanswered question would be whether the business was still trading in 1963 - in which case an Old Reading Abbey port being F63 would be possible, or whether a forger has picked an old/defunct wine merchant and just used their name to create counterfeit bottles. Hopefully the former, but it...

Re: Old Reading Abbey Brand
Butler and Sons were a wine and spirits merchant with premises in Reading who used the brand "Old Reading Abbey" as a BOB (Buyer's Own Brand) for whisky in the early 1900s, and could perhaps have used it for port also.

Re: Tuke Holdsworth vertical (not for now).
Following further discussion at the recent WC tasting, the idea for a TH vertical has been put on hold given the very limited number of bottles that people have available; other potential ways to extend the tasting (such as expanding to any Hunt/Roope, adding other Brands of similar era [e.g. Consta...

Re: A newbie question on provenance
Hi Sean, interesting to see what decisions you made, thanks for posting a follow-up. The most obvious difference from your original post to now is that originally you were intending to buy 35-50 year old port, but your purchasing is almost all less than 30 years old (TV78 aside), with much of it <25...

Re: which are the biggest quintas?
That was my thinking, especially since the original post made me wonder if it was an academic question, in which case contacting the IVDP for evidence might make sense.JacobH wrote:They must be in order to make the beneficio system work, surely?

Would the quinta size (estate and/or vine area) have been registered with the IVDP?

Re: Tuke Holdsworth vertical (? TBC perhaps 21st Nov 2023)
Doubtless this will be a complete tasting, including all of: 1931 Tuke Holdsworth 1934 Tuke Holdsworth 1935 Tuke Holdsworth 1943 Tuke Holdsworth (Quinta da Eira Velha) 1945 Tuke Holdsworth 1947 Tuke Holdsworth 1948 Quinta da Eira Velha ? Perhaps 1950 Tuke Holdsworth FWIW, I have images of bottles p...

Re: Tuke Holdsworth vertical (? TBC perhaps 21st Nov 2023)
So far we have expressions of interest from 10 people (possibly 12), but only five vintages. That number might yet increase (THRA?) but if not then we might need to expand the criteria, perhaps by including other Hunt Roope and Co produced brands from the same period (such as the Eira Vehla '43 and ...

Tuke Holdsworth vertical (abandoned)
A Tuke Holdworth vertical was requested at a recent tasting; on discussion we had a reasonable amount of interest but very few bottles between us; not really enough. Rather than expanding the tasting with additional Brands or just additional good VPs, the preference was to save the bottles for other...

Opened 21:45. Bottle top covered with a coffee filter, to keep out insects. Sound like you need to bury the bodies, not leave them in your cellar. Obviously there should also be a "Bottle top covered with muslin" bottle for comparison, also. Sadly no chance for last-minute attendance this...

Massive thanks to Neil for putting this together, and the tenacity to make is still happen after a number of rescheduling issues, and to Neil and Tony for supplying the hard ports. A thoroughly enjoyable evening, and great that Tiago was able to join us as well (and that Harry could stay! Hurrah!).

Re: The 1980s & quality
I’d also avoid F80, but only because it’s not a great wine. Perhaps it’s one for you to buy and try so you can make up your own mind. The last bottle of F80 I had was delicious, but looking back at my tasting notes of 1980 vintage port, my top two highest rated bottles of 1980 vintage port are both...

How many of these are there now? Is it just these five: Graham’s Stone Terraces; Taylor’s QdVVV; Qd Noval Nacional; Niepoort Bioma (& friends); and Croft Sērikos? You're also missing at least Vesuvio Capela, and the Warre Vinha Velhas (only one release to date, in 2020 for the 350th anniversary...

I'm talking to Zak about having 2 (or more) machines running tomorrow night. That should give both a clear view of ...
