Re: Filtration
I buy cheese cloth, several yards at a time. Do use the same piece over and over though. Only one layer, I want it filtered, but not filtered too much. Just enough to catch stuff, but not wait 5 minutes for it to pass through.

Re: 1992 Vesuvio
“Dull and not so interesting” and with no obvious VA sounds like a Port that’s going through a dumb phase. My experience of the ‘92 Vesuvio is similar to Glenn’s. Generally I find them to be big, bold and fruit forward. Your description is not what I would expect or hope for. Dumb Phase is what my ...

Re: 1992 Vesuvio
Had some more last night. This bottle has more heat to it than I would've thought (noticed from the 1st night). Color is dark and not cloudy at all. No prune, VA, or banana kind of flavors. Just kind of dull and not so interesting.

Re: 1992 Vesuvio
Last night, it showed dried orange/mandarin orange along with some floral notes. The coffee/Kahlua is more secondary. Does not taste "baked" like I was expecting with older Vesuvio vintages. 90 points at best. As far as "baked" goes, I've found that 1992 is usually beyond that t...

1992 Quinta do Vesuvio
Opened last night. Pop and pour was interesting. Very strong coffee flavor with green peppers. Wife said "Is this port?" Not much of a nose. I find that Vesuvio's evolve a lot (for better or worse) over a day or two. Will try some more tonight.

No wax on the reissued '77? Makes sense there was no selo on the original since they weren't for sale.

Re: Latest buy
I thought the producers had to declare a vintage within a certain period of time? I take it that doesn't mean said vintage needs to come to market though. Yes, definitely. Cockburn 1977 became an official declaration in, ooh, about 2017. That's the only one I can think of off hand. I am yet to try ...

Re: Latest buy
The source is 100% reliable - no doubt. There is a story to this bottle... When Symington bought Cockburn, they found stock of Vintage Bottlings in the cellars. They will sell those bottles in the future. I thought the producers had to declare a vintage within a certain period of time? I take it th...

Re: A new section to our Forum
I have no objection at all. I might do the same with some South African fortifieds. I bought a magnum of Vin de Constance a little while ago. Never tried any before, but was offered a terrific deal. Supposed to be something. It's many years ago since I had much to do with Vin de Constance, but if m...

I also tried, recently, some of the Azores’ fortified wine: a 10-year-old Verdelho by Ilha do Pico. It was fine and drinkable, but I’m afraid I don’t think I would seek it out (as opposed to say the Carcavelos from Villa Oeiras which, on re-tasting, is more than just a novelty: it’s very decent win...

Re: Port and smoked brisket - Texas style
Maple and Apple are popular local woods to use in the North East of USA. The oak up here is much different than in Texas. Use our oak and your BBQ will taste like a campfire. I like to put food on the smoker for an hour or so and then finish inside in the oven. I like the smell from the wood and mea...

I would wait a couple of years and see what is declared and come to market. There will be something for sure. If not port, how about vintage Champagne? 6 pack of Cristal or Dom would be a welcome gift.
