Re: Favourite corkscrews
After too many mangled, broken, and disintegrating corks, I switched to my favorite: An extra-long three-finger steel pull whose bore is a wide, hollow spiral with a sharpened edge. I picked it up for a few pounds in a corkscrew stall on Portobello Rd; it's labeled circa 1920, but there's no brand o...

Templates?
There have been a number of posts to the Selling Port forum and every time folks fail to mention the details prescribed at the top of the forum. JDaw inevitably then informs them. I am wondering if phpBB might allow a template to be used for new posts to a forum. There are some extensions by the nam...

Re: Samples with cases of ports
Love this idea -- what a great way for the consumer to get an idea what the bottle(s) they are laying down for 15-30yrs are like. Go Quevedo! Marketing brilliance there.

Virtual Cross-atlantic tasting
I'd like to plan a cross-atlantic virtual tasting at a time that isn't wildly inconvenient for East Coast US and UK. Would attendees be willing to meet on a weekend? Would attendees be willing to start on a weekday at 8:30pm BST / 3:30pm EDT ? Would attendees be willing to meet on a Friday afternoon?

1980 Dow I believe there was also a 2011 stone terraces. Given that almost all tasters had to taste independently, and without guarantee of tasting note submission, I'd encourage each to post a note for their respective wine, then reply here with the link. Tasting note format is YYYY Housename. Fun...

1980 Dow
1980 Dow Vintage Port from a half-bottle Dark as usual, with a garnet color when it thins. Pop and pour, so clarity is lacking, better by night 2. Nose has light bottle stink & celery, with a hint of white pepper. Tastes of a well balanced port, big black cherry notes, a little spirity. There's ...

Re: Krohn vintage port
I would point out that this post -- tho labeled Vintage Port -- shows bottles labeled Colheita. While that means they wouldn't command a VP price, that also means they're a bit more resilient in storage.

Croft 70, lovely body and slow caramel flavors, but showing its age in that tired dusty fruit manner. A bit of a metallic edge to the nose. Never regretted this case.

Re: Lockdown Drinking
Eager to try something younger, i opened a warres 2000 on sunday. It remains quite a nice port, plenty of earthy complexity, chocolate and tannins. A bit of pine tar in the flavor profile strikes a discordant note. This did not stop me from having four glasses of it this evening, however.

Re: Lockdown Drinking
Quinta Eira Velha 1994 VP, which was lovely at +0, got a bit harsh shortly there after and didnt stand up to the meal, but later in the week (fridge time) rounded out quite nicely tho it lost any subtlety. It lasted a week, at a glass or two a night, from small bottles in the fridge. Tomorrow is a n...

All places we drink port in NY and NJ -- including our houses -- are temporarily closed with the exception of port drinking by the residents.

Re: Vintage rankings - 2017 awarded alpha status
I'm still annoyed that I bought a bunch of 2009 I don't know why - be patient (or at least, tell your offspring to be patient). I think 2009 will have an exceptional reputation when adjoining vintages start to fade.. Oh don't get me wrong, I'm always happy I bought Port, i just wish I'd bought MORE...

Re: Vintage rankings - 2017 awarded alpha status
When speaking to collectors about older ports, I am very bullish on 80's and 85's however rarely do i recommend them as a vintage. Instead, I recommend very specific houses. Based on that, your rankings Tom make sense because they rely on consistency across the vintage, not just "great ports.&q...

Re: Dow's 1977
As a precaution, i would advise fwd'ing to me all D77, or if the concern is great all '77s, as I'm rather insensitive to TCA. This will ensure that your wine is properly cared for and enjoyed thereby fulfilling its raison d'etre. This is a free, charitable service -- let no Port go unappreciated.

Re: Acquiring young vintage port
Congratulations on building up your Port cellar :) I'm betting there'll be a fire-sale on 2016's soon with the 2017's hitting the shelves (I'm headed out to get some 2017 tonight actually). You should find that your local stores are starting to stock it, and wine-searcher can guide you to them. Euro...

Re: Cockburns 1878
My point is that there is no 'apostrophe s' to be found in "Cockburn Smithes" I have never before seen a bottle that made this error. So, I am suspicious of a bottle that bears it. a good spot, I don't see any either when I look around for bottles with that label design. That suggests the...

Re: Cockburns 1878
I did a bit of searching for images of old Cockburn, and in particular this one came up: http://www.theportforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=2121 While that style label seems to have been in vogue from the 20's-60's, you'll notice the older bottles there don't have it. So it was either released mid century ...

Re: Graham's 1977 Vintage Port
I agree with Andy on this, as I'm familiar with the wine and wouldn't put money on Graham 77 rather than Graham 80 or 85 (or even 83). For the right price, i'd be interested in cellar defenders (low cost port that I drink before the high cost port). All that said, it makes folks like me poor candida...

Re: Graham's 1977 Vintage Port
Have you opened the case to assess their condition? Are there any signs of leakage, are any of the selo tags (the white tags that emerge from under the black capsule) showing red stains? Have they been in the house since they were purchased, and were they stored by the furnace or somewhere cooler? D...

.... Also no Gould Campbell and no Smith Woodhouse, but for other (more dire) reasons. The no Gould Campbell was certainly an other more dire reason. Smith Woodhouse not so dire I thought - that brand still lives on in the SFE portfolio. They made a SW16 so hopefully you are correct. FWIW GC also s...
