Re: Mayson's Top 20 Buys

The leader for the article says "...reviews the main styles and latest trends, and picks out his top 20 to buy". Who knows...perhaps Richard is sitting reading "his" article thinking "those muppets at Decanter...I didn't pick my top 20 to buy, just a handful of examples in s...

Re: Mayson's Top 20 Buys

It's just an article to fill some pages in Decanter and allow them to explain some things about port to novices. As such, this does cause me to think hard about whether I should afford any substance to other articles I might read in Decanter, like "Exploring Rioja" or "Top 20 Barolo&q...

Re: Possible new venues

That dining room looks lovely. Ben: are you able to take charge and arrange a tasting? At some stage, yes. That depends on me negotiating a pass, not easy with Christmas approaching and a number of existing commitments made. But I will see what can be agreed when Mrs R returns from her current trav...

Re: Thursday 23rd April 2015 - 6 decades of Port Declaration

Presumably there will be another port which is older than 1970, otherwise that is only 5 decades being represented. I stand back and wait for our resident pendants to correct you. Presumably by pointing out that 1970 is considered part of the 7th decade of the 20th century. Most definitions I can f...

Re: Thursday 23rd April 2015 - 6 decades of Port Declaration

Presumably there will be another port which is older than 1970, otherwise that is only 5 decades being represented. The Port Walk at the end of this month is my first BBR event. I'm struggling to see the value in £135 for 13 ports, of which 8 are less than 20 years old...

The list is there. It's up above the participants list in a paragraph rather than a vertical list.

Would you have used it to decant the Vau DM for the '97 Maturity Evaluation? If I recall correctly, the Vau DM at that event arrived in multiple bottles.

2010 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères Thierry Pillot

Steely pale yellow, nose very fresh citrus, limes, with some nuttiness and that wonderful petroleum aroma the montrachets can offer. Nicely balanced in the mouth with gentle citrus notes.

German Rieslings

The recent flood of German Riesling tasting notes has certainly reinforced my view on why I struggle with that particular category - the names are just far too long and tedious. For example, 2012 F Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel. I mean why stop there? They could have added th...

Decanted 5 hours. 35% opacity, cloudiness. Red-brown-orange. Strange nose, slightly dusty musty, but then prunes behind that. Bit spirituous in the mouth and quite dry. Not on the best form this particular bottle.

Decanted 5 hours. 30% opacity, very fine sediment, warm red-brown. Warm fruit nose, strawberry. Nice smooth entry, builds to a gently spirituous finish. Sweet - oranges. Fresh mouthfeel, but syrupy nonetheless. Good stuff, but not sure this will have a better time ahead of it.

Decanted 10 minutes after a lot of huffing and puffing from Ian. 20% opacity, brown-orange, slight cloudiness. Not much on the nose, maybe faint hints of honeycomb. Very nice smooth entry, sugary sweet. Not a belter compared to some others this evening, but nice nonetheless.

Decanted 10 minutes. 20% opacity, cloudy tan brown. Dirty nose, a bit dusty and slightly spirituous, but behind this some spice, cinnamon. Hot entry, a sugary mouthfeel but strangely not so sweet. Quite quick to a sharp finish on the palate. Superb long aftertaste of oranges. 30 minutes later, the n...
