Re: Seeking "The Authentic Vintage Port" experience...?

So - the challenge - an alien arrives from deep in outer space and says "Take me to your most representative vintage port" - where do you take him, given that he only has 100 euros in his pocket? He's only visiting for a week, so it's for drinking now. I think the reasons for the rambling...

Re: Buying or Selling Port

Could the "grubby old bottles" sticky be somehow moved to below the "Selling port, excellent, start here" sticky in the Selling Port sub-forum? Such an arrangement would seem more intuitive for new visitors.

Re: Checking ullage levels

Hi - As Derek mentions, a good bright small torch is ideal to shine through the neck of the bottle, to see the level. Once you can see it, you can then describe it using terminology as per Bordeaux bottles, such as here (link in case you're not familiar with the terminology).

I agree with Chris that 1970 is one of the finest drinking years, so I would always be up for a 1970 horizontal, large or small.

Re: Friday the 13th

I am told the Ethos can even see through cloud. We had some friends round a couple of weeks ago and had the telescope out; there was a lot of patchy cloud, so we weren't expecting to see much; I aimed it at Jupiter, and was very surprised to find that some of the time, although Jupiter was covered ...

Re: Adriano Ramos Pinto

I have 6-8 bottles of 1982 vintage Adriano Ramos Pinto that was given to me as a present growing up. It's been kept well and has only moved once in around 20 years. From some googling i've seen it's selling at around £65/70 a bottle. Does that sound right? Hi Jim, and welcome to :tpf: To add a litt...

The bigger problem turned out to be to get any of the moon in the shot, since we had cloud cover all evening.

Re: 2011 Georg Breuer Rüdesheim Estate Riesling

This is a dry village wine from one of the leading Rheingau producers (according to the Gault & Millau wine guide). Pale yellow, smells of grapefruit and a little bit of petrol, quite full bodied, dry, but not too dry and definitely not tart, doesn't have much acidity though, grapefruit and som...

Re: A good port shop?

A nice selection of bottles; but all standing up. How long have they been like this? Would you buy here? (prices-aside, since I can't read them) Maybe, though I'd be wary. If the store had decent temp control, and that the bottles were well out of sunlight then I'd talk to the store owner to see if...

Re: Tue 03 June 2014, Blind 1958s for Oscar Quevedo

Having done a number of larger tastings recently, the more informal (though precisely managed - thank you to the decanting team) smaller tasting with a group of friends was very enjoyable, and good to meet Oscar again. I had not tried any '58s previously (with exception of a '58 Calem colheita), so ...

However, we do have another member whose wife is also an amateur astronomer - perhaps Mrs W from Cambridge could do the honours? Met office says "maybe" (cloudy but dry, but another 3 days to go so things may change). Mrs W says "maybe - but how will we take the photo?" (we don'...

Signs of the zodiac, if done by pictures (which people could recognise) rather than symbols (which few would know) might work also. ♈ ♉ ♊ ♋ ♌ ♍ ♎ ♏ ♐ ♑ ♒ ♓ ? I recognise none of them. Those are the symbols (I could only recognise five); I was thinking more like small images of lion (leo), scorpion ...

Do people know chess pieces better than Greek letters? I would expect yes. Perhaps also worth noting that some Greek letters are probably better known than others (such as alpha, beta, omega(capital) and pi, also (which if we are after a set rather than a sequence would allow the option of using th...

Please could Flash and Phil explain why they have not liked upper-case Roman numbers: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, …? Width variation. Not such an issue with the smaller numbers, but VIII, XIII .. XVIII all look too busy to me; They could be reduced, by maximising font size I suppose, but I see no width-...

Re: Naming blinded bottles

My preference would be for (a) (b) as I think the single character per-bottle looks better Also observe the problem with ascenders and descenders: if “b” is vertically centred, and “a” has the same baseline, then “a” is below the centre. But if they have different baselines that is a different visu...

Lower-case Roman numerals have the minor disadvantage of significantly varying width ("i" vs "xviii" for example), but have the advantage of being clearer in verbal discussion ("bottle three is definitely Dow..."). Bracketing could be an option (i) (ii) to make things c...

I'm afraid that I agree with JDAW; Garrafeira Nacional have this available at just under £500/bottle, and I last saw this at auction in December last year for £270 (including BP), so I think you may struggle to get the type of price you describe. I would that this is a port to save for a special occ...

Another interesting reference, which along with (the underlying assumptions within) Pallant vs Morgan might also be relevant. The situation might also be different for dealers than for private individuals. Where is the consumer-dealer boundary? Although nothing in their reply addressed this, I would...
