Re: 1965 Taylor Vargellas

A slightly sour end note marred an otherwise very good port. Mature fruit, integrated components and a pretty flattering appearance could have made for a near magical experience had it not been for that end note imperfection.

Re: 1965 Fonseca Guimaraens

Dark orange to light ruby. Darkest of the '65s. Lovely powerful fruit with a warm comforting note from the spirit backing everything up. My only quibble was that it seemed a bit short but that is really a minor fault and i would have been very content drinking this on its own. Very nice port.

Re: 1965 Graham Malvedos

Wonderfully amber and dark orange in colour. Hard to resist picking up the glass simply on account of its appearance. I thought the nose initially had some fleeting volatile notes but after that initial hit i failed to detect them. Simply gorgeous port, some orange peel, soft mature fruit and well i...

Re: 1966 Graham

From magnum. Bought from auction in Sweden and shipped across. Good occasion to finally open this. Ruby core but perhaps a little paler than W66. This displayed all the attributes one wants in a port, mature fruit, secondary aromas of nut and marzipan, nicely warming and mellow spirit and a fantasti...

Re: 1966 Warre

Incorrectly guessed as Noval '66 but hey-ho at least i got the vintage right. Dark-ish ruby. Good hit of dark fruit and stone fruit kernels on the nose which carries onto the palate. Initially (shortly after pour), this had a slightly harsh and alcoholic end note which vanished during the course of ...

Re: 1980 Graham

True to form, I was nowhere close in guessing this which i had "pegged" as Croft 1995 (intended as Roeda of course). Dark, closed and something of a brute in the way its components appear to veer off in separate directions. I think Julian's recommendation to leave well alone for 20 years m...

This was indeed an excellent evening!Entertaining tales, hearty laughter and good company combined with some rather stunning ports made this a very memorable event. A special thank you must go out to Derek who very kindly provided no less than five ports from 1965! *doffing hat* For me it was a very...

Re: Tuesday 31st March - informal and blind

Placemats updated. Magnus: even under the best of circumstances, my Swedish plurals can be irregular. After some sparkles, some left-over Rioja, some left-over Croft 2004 LBV, and some newly decanted Offley LBV 2007, they can be downright unusual. Please check the central header. I would amend the ...

Nine people won’t squeeze into the Green Room. Please consider amending the booking for the Red Room. Julian: Would the Ovens at B&F be suitable for a tasting in terms of light, privacy etc? Also, can the green room fit seven (current probable headcount)? If yes and no, then I'll book the Ovens...

recent tasting of 1980 VP

Phil's post in the 31st March tasting thread made me visit the VP site run by my Swedish brethren. There I found a recent review of 25 VPs from 1980 which was interesting to read. This vintage is fascinating in the way it completely flies below the radar, perhaps with the exception of Dow, but yet s...
