All the hallmarks of a UK bottling but no markings to confirm by whom. A slightly damaged capsule confirms "FONS 1963 VINTAGE". Level is about 1cm into the neck and 2.5cm below the base of the cork. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1372/1244587818_333fa1adc2.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.co...

I thought others might be interested to read the notes of Michael Broadbent on the wines we will be drinking - if nothing else, just to make Jdaw keep bouncing up and down with excitement  ... 1920 **** Broadbent's book has no note on the Fonseca 1920 but has notes from Croft, Graham and Taylor...

I Hate Modern Labels

When I was lining up the bottles for the picture below I thought it was a magnificant example of why the port trade should have resisted the temptation to go for fancy labels designed by some spotty kid straight out of art school. Just look at how soulless those three bottles to the far right look w...

It was definately drinkable at the time otherwise I would not have re-bottled it. What it tastes like now is anyone's guess but I suppose we are about to find out.

Please note that pictures of capsules and labels have now been taken but will not appear in the TN threads until I have a fast internet connection. I am currently limited to 56kbs modem speed at home so uploading the picture of the line-up was challenging and frustrating, although not nearly as anno...

One of my many mental disorders is a need to have labels on every bottle in my cellar. If they arrive without one I make one. This is a very early example which used the Fonseca logo from their website. I now realise this design was a mistake and it should have been a simple white stencil font on a ...

Jdaw, I will happily comply with the above but please note that the 1920 will not be opened until I get there and the 1985 will already be at Conky's. I do not plan to publish the 0+0 notes here until after everyone has had a chance to taste the wines to ensure I do not influence anyone's judgement....

F-Planners,

I think it would amusing to do this tasting blind. We could pour the wines, tasted them all, and then each of us try to guess which is which.

What do you think?

Jdaw,

I see you have started the review thread and tasting notes. Good planning!

I was hoping to begin posting pictures of the bottles tonight. Should I add them to each individual TN or the review?

I suppose all I am saying is that there are many factors that would affect the amount of heat in any given port. So we are in agreement 88)

Alan, I think that is possibly true in some instances but I also think that the heat in any given port will have more to do with how well the alcohol and fruit have integrated and the overall quality of the wine. I don't think there would be a straight colleration between the % of brandy and the res...

I was under the impression that the £40 was a hire cost. Getting to keep enough port glasses to hold a tasting for <£20 is nt what I had expected.
