Re: 1999 Warre LBV

Traditional LBV, bottled 2003. Deep red in colour; closed on the nose, showing very little other than some volatile alcohol. Lovely depth on entry; rich licorice and deep, sweet brambles. Soft but persistent tannins grip the teeth and cheeks. Really lovely development on the palate. Slight heat from...

Re: 1995 Warre LBV

Almost opaque, but not quite; a lovely deep red. Quite empty on the nose, but swirling releases some astringent blackcurrant. Empty initial impact on the mouth, but this grows into very fruity and surprsingly tannic blackcurrant beast. The blackcurrants dominate the aftertaste and fade to reveal swe...

Re: 1997 Krohn LBV

Bottled in 2001. Mature red in colour, 80% opaque. Nose is similar to the Taylor and Niepoort LBVs shown alongside this wine (which is not a good thing!) but the wine has a lovely texture on entry. It is clear on the palate that the bottle has suffered from stink and these flavours dominate the earl...

Re: 1975 Niepoort LBV

Bottled unfiltered in 1979. Slightly cloudy, very pale orange in colour, only 10% opaque. Unattractive plastic smells on the nose. Neutral - even hollow - entry with some honey and a bit of grapefruit sweetened with brown sugar. Hollow aftertaste, which does evolve into a gentle floral finish. Very ...

Re: 1979 Taylor LBV

Filtered, bottled in 1985. 30% opaque. Vague plastic on the nose, but mostly an absence of smell. Sweet in the mouth, quite hollow, but some juniper bitterness. Aeration allows fuller flavours to develop - oranges and coffee. Sweet and sticky aftertaste, followed by a mild chocolate and very long le...

Re: 1969 Taylor LBV

Filtered, bottled in 1975. 30% opaque. Soft and mature red colour. Consistent (plastic) nose with the previous two Taylor LBVs (1965 and 1967). Some fruit on impact, but very dry and with VA on the palate; very hot. Also hot on the aftertaste, but the heat fades slowly to reveal a long, sour cherry ...

Re: 1967 Taylor LBV

Filtered, bottled in 1973. Clear; barley sugar colour. Swirling releases a little floral scent and some lemon-fruit. Sweeter in the mouth than the '65 shown alongside, but followed by a wave of harsh acidity. Unbalanced and overly aggressive. The aftertaste takes time to settle down, but allows a da...

Re: 1965 Taylor LBV

Filtered, bottled in 1971. Purchased at auction. Cloudy in appearance, light brown in colour. Smelling of old carpets and plastic. Morphed with an extra 30 minutes in the glass into a slightly sour honey. Swirling releases the plastic bottle stink again. Harsh attack, acidic but with honey undertone...

1963 Graham vintage port

From a bottle opened in sympathy with the fellow TPF members meeting at The Crusting Pipe on a night when I was not able to join them. A bottle that was ullaged to mid-shoulder. A beautiful colour; red, but almost a deep burnt sienna; crystal clear. Open and inviting nose, full of of dusty candied c...

Re: Emergency OL @ TCP - Sunday 6/2 at 7pm

I sooo need an offline with some decent port, but I can't make it. Just too many other things on at the moment. Still, I will think of you on Sunday and may well open a bottle and drink it blind as part of a virtual offline. Not sure when I'll next be in London and able to take part in a real offlin...

Re: LBV Old and New - part 2

I've just opened a Baldias 1987 LBV. I would wholeheartedly endorse Jacob's suggestion that LBVs seem to hit their peak before they reach their 30th birthday. I would have suggested 20-30 years, but that's just a matter of personal preference.

Re: Which set of bottles would you have preferred?

I was curious to know which of these bottles had been opened, and what had been the contents; so I summarised as follows: 1. Capsule unbranded black, perhaps same as 5 or 7 or both. Skirt of capsule removed, but glass too dark to see branding, if there be any. Level about +10mm above bottom neck. 2....

Re: tpf book of tasting notes?

I have no idea how much work or cost would be involved, but I think a book of our tasting notes and offline reviews would be a terrific idea as a way to celebrate our 5th anniversary. Does anyone have any idea how difficult this might be to make happen? Does anyone know when our 5th anniversary migh...

LBV Old and New - part 2

Another fascinating tasting took place at The Crusting Pipe on January 26th, which featured 9 different LBvs thanks to the generosity of Alex K who was the surprise appearance of the night. We had an academically interesting vertical of Taylor 1965, 1967, 1969 and 1979. The conclusion I came to was ...

Re: A Handbook of Wine - William J Todd

I find it fascinating to see that the effect of phyloxera, in the 1860s, set the industry back barely 20 years in volume terms and with a huge rate of recovery. Given how many moratorios are still visible in the Douro it is fascinating to speculate what happened to generate such a quick and substant...

A Handbook of Wine - William J Todd

While in Cornwall over a long weekend I spent a few minutes browsing in a particularly good second hand bookshop that I know. I bought a copy of ‟A Handbook of Wine” by William J Todd, published by Jonathan Cape of Eleven Gower Street, London in 1922. William J Todd died in 1941, which means that t...

[I'm very happy with a Warre 1999 but would prefer something older than the 2004 Infantado, if that's possible - even if in half bottle. No problems; will dig out a couple of halves rather than the Infantado. Also, CHR would like to bring a +1 who was supposed to come to the ‟are we wasting our mon...
