Re: 1985 M. Gonzalez VP
‟M. Gonzalez” added to list of known producers, with abbreviation MG (as in ‟MG85”), and alpha-sorted by ‟Gonzalez M”. Does the back label make clear whether it should have an accent as in ‟González Byass”?

To be fair, 35 with only one mezzanine pint of beer. If multiples beers are allowed, maybe 40 would be achievable.DRT wrote:35 is the new standard for a comprehensive horizontal

Re: The Great TCA Debate
A recent Fonseca 1985 showed no TCA on opening (though I am very insensitive to it), but at D+17hr was undrinkable. It was left for three weeks were in a stoppered room-temperature decanter, after which the TCA was all gone. So some air can show the TCA, but more air can make it go away.

With apologies for interrupting this fascinating conversation amongst our resident punctuation pedants, but it is time to go back to the juice. :QuotePedant: Still very big; very fruit forward blackcurrants especially; and large though not as large as earlier promised. Reasonable acidity, but a litt...

I’ll ask BBR what they have. If they have separate regions, or regionless, I’ll act as appropriate.

Re: Corked/Spoilt Ports - Name and Shame
The list of name-and-shame corked wines ought to be kept separate from the Great TCA Debate (both being worthwhile, but being different). If you object to my splitting the latter from the former please PM me within 24 hours.

1997 Ramos Pinto
1997 Ramos Pinto : the label curiously devoid of hyphens. It took three attempts with the garrote to open it, but at 2pm we were underway. The decanter-priming sample opaque red-red-back, and nosing of lots of stewed fruit Vesuvio prunes. To taste big: astringency, prune fruit, then heat throughout...

Re: 1996 Cálem Quinta da Foz
Much more later. Full of young smooth fruit. A joy to drink, in the sense of a not-fully-mature medium-weight excessively-hyphenated port full of plums and blackberries. Not heavy enough to be a full-on great port, but for the pittance it cost, and even if it cost several pittances more, very fine.

Re: Where to get Port Tongs
This afternoon, opening a CáF96, I completely forgot to use the garotte. But I just tested it on the empty bottle, and I am a fan. The garotte is so much better than tongs. Please, if there is a second batch of garottes, may I have one to keep in the UK?

1996 Calem Foz
Cálem Quinta da Foz 1996: seen in the Wine Warehouse, and having so liked the CáF70, purchased for all of $16+tax. Decanted at 1:30pm. Very opaque deep red. Nose closed. Taste full of dark fruit, but quite astringent. Needs time in the decanter. More later in both senses.
