Re: TheVintagePortSite Virus Issue

And now, to complete the amusement, I've just seen Dom's protestations over his Cruz Ruby status.

Perhaps we should change the next staus now, before he advances to Cockburn Special Reserve...

Re: An invitation to TPF

The rules around product stored in bond are quite strict, access has to be limited in order for HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) to be able to ensure that no goods are smuggled out of bond and revenue lost as a result. However, there are no laws or regulations which prevent product in bond f...

Re: TheVintagePortSite Virus Issue

There is something vaguely amusing to my warped sense of humour to see Dom Symington's status as a poster on The Port Forum as Cruz Ruby. Yet me, who has nothing to do with the industry other than trying to consume as much of their production as I can manage; I have a status of Vesuvio 1994. Is that...

Re: Unknown port

We've drifted away from the original enquiry a little, but until we get some more information or a response to some of our questions, there is little more help that we can offer. So, instead, I'll follow the drift. I've been lucky enough to have had the time to browse in Garrafeira Nacional's shop i...

An invitation to TPF

A well known UK wine merchant, loved and supported by a number of people on this board as both a source of port and a good place to store excess bottles, has asked whether we would - in principle only - be interested in an informal, Group, guided tour of their establishment and in particular their o...

Re: 1997 Burmester

Stored in a fridge for the last 4 days. Deep red in colour and opaque. Nosing nicely of sweet blackcurrants, very fragrant. Quite aggressive entry, bringing much tannin and acidity with the modest levels of fragrant fruit. Blueberries dominate the aftertaste, which leads to a red cherry and black ch...

Re: 2000 Quinta do Crasto

This is the correct tasting note for this port: Deep red, opaque and youthful. Subdued nose, a little blackcurrant and perhaps a touch of mint. Lovely, balanced entry bringing a terrific blend of fruit, gentle tannin and strong acidity. Fairly straightforward, with little depth or complexity but ple...

Re: 2000 Quinta do Crasto

Alex, Regarding your score, I assume that was how it was drinking right then? If so, what potential do you see in it, as your score seems a bit low compared to your actual tasting note. OK. Confession time. I got my samples mixed up and my tasting note above was actually for the Burmester 1997. How...

Re: Operation Barlborough, with Special Forces in Wokingham

Clearly another port which was under decanted by a week. It was quite tasty and pleasant by the time I drank it - but was whole-heartedly a tawny and showed no signs of any VP or LBV characteristics.

Re: Operation Barlborough, with Special Forces in Wokingham

Included in the samples sent to Wokingham was one which was unlabelled. I suspect that I know what it might be... A pale, reddish-brown in colour with a green hint on the rim when the glass is tilted. On the nose, this is very tawny with the distinctive mix of burnt sugar and stewed fruit. Acidic en...

Re: Unknown port

I tend to agree with Tom - this is a UK merchant bottled vintage port. I would guess that the merchant is a regional or relatively minor merchant as they have not put their firm name on the capsule. I have a theory that in the mid-late 60s, many regional merchants were finding in uneconomic to run t...

A sample posted by DRT, stored in the fridge from receipt. Reported as being corked, but only appearing to be mildly so (if at all) from the nose. Thick and luscious on the palate; full bodied with plenty of dry cherry fruit and a woody / cedar core. TCA perhaps shows very mildly as a woody tone on ...

Calem 1985
Opened at the Crusting Pipe on August 26 2010; sadly quite badly tainted. The only time I have tried this port so I hope this is not the last time.

Deep red, mature yet still with some youthfulness. Soft red fruits on the nose. Soft, medium bodied entry bringing sweet prunes and damsons and a slight peppery bite. The tannins are light, with noticeable but balanced acidity. The aftertaste is acidic and slightly unbalanced and has a short finish ...

Pale brown and cloudy, since it was not decanted. Faint figs and dates on the nose, Apple juice; spicy juniper running through a sweet bruised apple. Some heat and acidity and rather an angular structure. Hot aftertaste, followed by a brown sugar finish. Drinkable, but not fantastic by any means; I ...

Slightly lightet and more mature looking than the QH77 shown alongside. Sweet raisins and mace on the nose, with lots to smell. Sweet entry, good levels of secondary fruit, which show a good balance. Some very slight tannins and gentle acidity. Lovely balance. A slight burn on swallowing, then a lon...

Mature red, good colour but with a clear centre. Sharp, minty nose; prunes and roses showing well. Great texture on entry, medium bodied and with a lively pepperiness.. Delightful sweet fruit and a perfect balance of secondary flavours. Lovely sweet start to the aftertaste, followed by a long anisee...

Thick texture, full bodied with good palate presence. Tannins are near integrated, the acidity is lively but restrained and wel...
