Re: Oscar Night Port Tasting - London - 11th Feb 2010
Are we confirming that this is a blind tasting? Is there any guidance that we should follow other than "Weird colheitas and unusual ports"?

Re: The 1000 finest wines ever made
Combining all the lists together and liberally adding a few more of my own, I've come up with the following list of the 100 Greatest Ports Ever made (with minimum age of 10 years today and as judged when drunk today for both future potential and current enjoyability). So which of these represent the...

Re: Corked/Spoilt Ports - Name and Shame
Is it me or am I just unlucky as I opened a Moggies 91 earlier today and the cork almost exploded from the bottle. The contents, however, remained and is bearing up like most M91's I have had before, however, a non Port drinking member of my family who I asked to taste it noted a distinct 'fizz'......

1986 Taylor Quinta de Vargellas vintage port
Deep red, but centre just transparent. Roses and Turkish Delight on the nose. Smooth and balanced texture in the mouth , terrific balance between sweetness and structure. Tannins are fully integrated and the development and complexity is very impressive and delightfully complex. A little hot on the ...

1982 Sandeman vintage port
Glowing red colour, pale and transparent but clear and bright. Slightly mushroomy on the nose - a bit worrying, but after a few minutes this developed to be much more of a herbaceous note. Sweet initial impact, followed by dry tannins on the cheeks. Soft cherry juice fruit, although a little simple ...

Kopke. Slight cloudy appearane. Pale red in colour. Floran nose, slightly chocolately and with a touch of white pepper, but very restrained. Sweet entry with a slightly bitter flavour - quince perhaps. Sweet and bland entry, little in the mouth other than jelly beans. Nothing but sweet strawberries ...

1980 Croft Quinta da Roeda vintage port
Slightly cloudy appearance, pale in colour. Showing little on the nose and with a hollow impact followed with lots of heat in the palate and very little fruit. Patience with the wine in the mouth allows some candied fruit to come through. The aftertaste is hollow but eventually some bitter orange pe...

1985 Messias Colheita
Bought by the glass from Gordon's wine bar in Charing Cross. A very pale orange in the candlelight on the table; nosing of sweet floral perfume over golden syrup. Sweet and sugary in the mouth, full of golden sultanas and violet perfume. Delicious mid-palate development with surprising complexity. A...

Very pale red in colour (in poor lighting) with a pale rim and a very light centre. Very hollow on the nose, although it opened and developed with time in the glass to reveal oranges and milk chocolate.. Lovely sweet antry, very soft andf elegant structure. Lightly fruity with a peppery bite in the ...

Deep red centre, clear and going rosy on the rim. Nosing of chart cherries and rhubarb. Quite dry on entry, with soft tannins behind the ripe fruit; full bodied and beautifully complex with a slightly bitter element. Warm and delicious aftertaste; mouthfilling and with a very long length which is su...

Re: 23rdFebruary offline @ The Crusting Pipe - Vesuvio vertical.
In a fit of enthusiasm and anticipation for this coming Vesuvio vertical, I had a quick trawl through the vintages which people have identified that they have available, and come up with the following list: DRT - 1994, 1996, 1997 WS1 - 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005 ARK - 1996 (having drunk all his 1994) C...

Re: 1 Feb 2010 - Crusting Pipe - Bring a bottle of Port
I would be most pleased to attend if there is still space. Chris, Absolutely there's space for you and you would be most welcome. The evening usually starts with people arriving between 6:30 and 7:00, we have a bite to eat and then drink some port. These offlines are very informal - come along with...

..."Taylor's Quinta de Pablo" then this is how it should be listed in a tasting note. My personal preference would be for the tasting note to be listed as Quinta de Pablo and have a reference in the tasting note to the fact that the quinta was owned by or the wines were bottled by Taylor....
