Because it's an animated .gif made up of a few still images displayed one after the other repeatedly to give the impression of movement. It isn't a real cat with a machine gun. Or, it may have a tube attached to the bottom of the magazine [just out of shot] which provides a constant supply of bullet...

You just can't help yourself, can you Alex? No, it's not Cruuuuuuzzzzzz. ...and no, Alan, it isn't Da Silva. Tom has the answer and I'd be interested to know if he was as surprised as I was at their inclusion in this list? For those still scratching around for an answer - it's 2 words, one of which ...

Perhaps we should all adopt it until jdaw drops by to say hello - it is even possible for us to set this as jdaw's avatar, although that would perhaps be considered abuse of power

Can I just go off topic for a moment and say that Alan's new Avatar is fabulous. That is exactly how I am going to feel on 13 August when I go back to work

It seems you guys have fallen into the same trap that most people have through the ages. Can I just remind you that 500 years ago 90% of the scientists in the world believed it was flat and that witches couldn't drown. 80 years ago no one knew how old the earth was and 50 years ago we didn't have ro...

I had one of these earlier this week. I did not take a TN but recall that it was hot on day 1, very nice on Day 2 and fading on Day 3.

Fred scored 8/9 - the last one to be found is a Portuguese house but not Ferreira. Their claim to fame on the 100 point scale came in the form of a 98/100 score for their 1871 vintage tasted in 1989 - incredibly, despite this very high score at 118 years of age, Mr Suckling recommended that we shoul...

Not really, I just can't see a bottle of F03 costing more than £50k in 80 years time due to a number of socio-economic factors. I could explain, but it's probably best if you don't ask.

Here's a good Nerdy question for you... Only 9 shippers managed to achieve a score of 96 to 100 points on the Wine Spectator scale for their vintages up to 1987. Can you name them? The winner is allowed to feel smug for 24 hours, unless he used google, a book or any similar reference source rather t...

Again, just for fun - taking the release price of F1927 against the only listed retail price on wine-searcher today as a benchmark, a bottle of Fonseca 2003 will cost £125,970 in 2087

You're not wrong, Alan. I think [from old family stories] my parents were paying £7 per Quarter for their mortgage in 1965. About the same price as 6 bottles of VP :?

The 100-Point Scale

I've been browsing through Suckling's book tonight and came across a page entitled Port Vintage Chart, 1900 to 1987 . This page lists all of the vintages between these years which Suckling tasted during the research for his book. A total of 61 vintages are quoted out of a possible 88. If we exclude ...

According to Suckling, the release price of the big name '85's was about £13/bottle - but did that include duty and VAT? I think it probably did, but he doesn't say... Yes he does - on page 137 he says "all United Kingdon prices include a 15% vat, and auction prices incorporate the 10% ...
