Re: One quiz at a time

I think we all know that there are "British" and "Portuguese" houses (and "German" and "Dutch ones too, and so on). That is what I was ascertaining. Hmm. In that case my answer may or may not be appropriate... I assumed you were wishing to eliminate English-bottli...

Re: It's just not cricket

Oh well. I'll console myself with having missed England's only win of 2014 with another glass of Taylor 1992. Or shall I go for the Smith Woodhouse 1997? Given the prices/selection on their website at the moment (assuming I know where you are) I would go for the T92 again since you liked it so much...

Re: One quiz at a time

Is it a bottling from a Portuguese shipper? Yes. Is it VP? No. Côtto? No (is that a port? I had to look it up, and I only found what seemed to be a red wine) Have you opened this port before and found it to have a branded cork? No - I had not opened this port before. 12/20 questions/guesses remaini...

Also Cockburn in both 2000 and 2007 issued Cockburn VP and Cockburn Quinta dos Canais VP (the latter being the one with the label much favoured by me in 2000).

Re: One quiz at a time

I have just opened and decanted a bottle of port. I was surprised to find that the cork did not have the producer's name on it; I believe this is the only bottle younger than I where I have seen this; I am certain it is not a fake. What is it?

Re: Question about declared years

Single Quintas are often released in non declared years, but in declared years, is it common that a house will also release a single Quinta? I was wondering if there would be a Dow bomfim or Graham malvedos 2011? Also, two years seems typical for the release of a declared vintage after it is harves...

I am based at St. Paul's Perfect. I am just by Ludgate Circus, so very handy. Not in London tomorrow, so looks like Monday is best. Will PM my number and we can work something out on Monday. Hi Axel; it would be good to see you and Dirk, but as I am already away from home the next two days I am unlikely to get permission for the 22nd as well. I will see you both on the 24th.

You are a very, very lucky man! Not only are you being given access to purchase at incredibly low prices, but with the addition of knowledge that the conditions in which they have been kept should have been excellent. Simply finding access to such rare bottles in high quality condition is rare enoug...

The Hotel du Vin in Cambridge is on my list of places to try sometime; seems like somewhere a tasting might work well, too, since they have a specific tasting/dining room as well.

Re: Jura - various

I'd not tried Jura (that I remember) before Burn's night this year when we had a bottle (of Origin) as one of the whiskies on the table. Given the prices, I think Origin is good vfm, though slightly light so I would not dilute. Diurachs' Own for preference, though twice the price.

Jura - various

Have tried several Jura whiskies recently: Jura Origin (10yr) : lighter style, quite clean, hint of honey Jura Superstition (?yr) : slightly peated, tasty Jura Elixir (12yr) : no peat, slight citrus hint, ok Jura Diurachs' Own (16yr) : fuller toast and honey hints, incredibly loooong delicious finis...

My starting point is to give an overall rating to each bottle I taste: excellent, very good, good, ok, poor, faulty Since I want to see some relative comparison and at some tastings all bottles can be in the top three categories, I allow myself use of + and - as a modifier to each as well. Re: 1992 Cockburn Quinta dos Canais

Just finished it tonight; the surprise was that at D+72 it was superb. Harsh raisins had mellowed, lovely thick smooth long taste, though still the hint of varnish on the finish, but better than it had been both previous nights. Deliciously consumed with Castello blue.

Re: 1992 Cockburn Quinta dos Canais

At D+4h, tasting was similar to D+0h. At D+24h, less vanilla, also better integrated, fuller mouth-feel, liquorice and raisins especially mid-palate; now a little more fruit-driven also, with some varnish on the late/finish. Based on the more integrated taste, I would retract my earlier "maybe ...
