Re: Latest buy
Yeah that's an excellent price for a superb Port. Its only real rival from the 1980s in my opinion is 1987 Taylor Vargellas, and if you want to stretch a bit then maybe 1985 Graham. For an otherwise down decade for TFP, the 1985 Fonseca and the 1987 Vargellas are beautiful. The 1980 Dow is very goo...

I cannot change weeks seeing as I'm planning a 2-week vacation around this tasting. I plan to arrive in London on Saturday or Sunday the 11th or 12th, then head to Portugal on Thursday or Friday the 16h or 17th for a tour from Sunday to Sunday (19-26).

Re: Croft vertical, Tue 07 Nov 2023
I rejoice at Glenn’s different experience and vote against including it in the line-up. I would send you one of mine if I could. I'm about halfway through a case and cannot recall any of them showing VA, which is something (unlike TCA) to which I am usually very sensitive. But still... not splendid...

Re: Vintage port & the adolescent lull
That phenomenon has been referred to by various names. The one that I use is the "teenage funk" because in the past it tended to be most obvious when the Ports were in their teens. They'd come out of it right around 20 or 21 years old, which is one of many reasons that people used to do ho...

Re: Croft vertical, Tue 07 Nov 2023
Unless my eyes mistake me I notice that the Cr85 is absent from the line up? It appears to be available on the retail market for £55. Should I group purchase? JDAW's call re: vintages/numbers, but I'd say yes. Julian? It’s reliably awful. That seems rather harsh. I have had it many times, and while...

Very nice! I've been doing that with Graham's The Stone Terraces every time they release a new vintage. Next one, including 2021, will probably happen early next year once the Port has reached the US.

Curious, indeed. Some day I hope to get to taste a 1993 Quinta das Liceiras!
Was the order of tasting as listed in the first post? That might have impacted the perception of some of the wines.

Re: Bottles you never want to open
Every bottle in my cellar was purchased to be consumed, but I admit that some are harder to open than others. Naturally, the high-end expensive bottles require something a little more significant than "it's Tuesday and I'm thirsty", but for the right tasting any of those are fair game. Get...

Re: "Port Edition" Durand coming soon - and UK purchase possibility
Do the Durands always work on old bottles? I run into those bottles with the crumbling corks and the soaked, splintering corks. For what they charge, I just want to ensure that they do the job no matter what type of cork I would encounter. It's not perfect, but it will pull vastly more corks than a...

Re: Port for sale at auction
Christie's sold 660 bottles (not a typo - six hundred sixty) of 1964 Justino's Boal V.J.H. earlier this year. 6 lots - 4 x 120, 108, and 72. Even if you drank one bottle every week that's over 12.5 years worth of Boal!

Re: A stranger traveling in a strange way
What a great story! I very much enjoyed it. Regarding DR Port... they're not as small as they may seem to be. The estate - Quinta da Levandeira do Roncão - has existed for a very long time, but was purchased by its current owners in 2001 and now sells wine under its own brand name. "DR" is...

Re: Latest buy
6 more 2021 Graham's The Stone Terraces in 750ml, plus a tregnum, bringing my total to 12 and 1. These are, of course, all in London, so I still need to acquire a couple here in the US (at an exorbitant price) so that I have them available to do my little verticals every time they release a new vint...

Re: Leaking cork, what should i do?
Phil's advice is good, but so is Andy's. What Phil's test will show you is which "drink soon" queue the bottle goes it. Drink ASAP, drink within the next year or two, or drink within 3-5 years. But as Andy said, if it has leaked - even due to the change in pressure it encountered during ta...

Re: 1925 Taylor Fladgate & Yeatman Vargellas port
I agree with Phil's assessment of value, and his conditions. I would probably be on the lower end of that range, mostly because I think in USD and would probably be willing to spend maybe $100 just out of curiosity.

Re: Port brand abbreviations
Dm = Dolamore? First post has images of the current draft of the placemats . Dm chosen as the abbreviation for Dolamore, as it was in October 2013 (second session, page 2, top). NB : Dl = Dalva; DM = Quinta Dona Matilde. Ick. While allowed, having both DM and Dm seems ripe to cause confusion. Per...

Re: NV Quevedo White 30YO (bottled 2022) - Tonel 14: Granpa's White
I note with amusement that our scores once again paralleled each other's, but for once your scores were higher than mine. I, too, liked Grandpa's, then Senior's, then Junior's, then Claudia's (aka the standard 30YO blend), but my scores were 90, 88, 88, and 85. I think that's Quevedo's style for whi...

I don't believe that they actually use "Quinta do Mourão" as a brand on any IVDP-approved labels https://www.portugalvineyards.com/pt/douro/15611-quinta-do-mourao-colheita-red-2015-5600345150368.html Point taken. Though I was talking about Port, I wasn't aware that they used "Quinta ...

Re: Port brand abbreviations
Quinta do Mourão has two brands: São Leonardo and Rio Bom. Miguel told me that they are the same wine but branded for different markets. I don't believe that they actually use "Quinta do Mourão" as a brand on any IVDP-approved labels because... and it's only a vague memory... I think I was...
