Re: New York City, between Feb 25 and Mar 1, 2009

Any of them would work, though since I'm partial to tawnies the Niepoort vertical (with Colheitas included) might be best.

I would probably have to adopt, though. Sadly, my cellar currently contains nothing from Dirk's house.

New York City, between Feb 25 and Mar 1, 2009

Gents, As I mentioned at the Old & Odd on November 7th, 2008, my wife is quite good at crossword puzzles. So good that she goes to the National Crossword Puzzle Tournament which is held in NYC (and which was the subject of the movie Wordplay ). Next year the tournament will be held from Friday, ...

Re: Fonseca Guimaraens 79

The Fonseca Guimaraens I was talking about is a 1964, not a 1979. If you're very nice to Derek you might be able to talk him into posting a picture of it since it's currently resting peacefully in his cellar. I also mentioned that I'd found a 1939 VP of some sort but couldn't remember exactly...

Aha! I believe that g-man's answer is most appropriate within context as I have seen it used. It seems to show up somewhat regularly here and on ftlop.com but I had never seen it explained.

Re: Port acronyms

As promised at the Old & Odd on November 7th, 2008: SABLE - S tash A ccumulation B eyond L ife E xpectancy This acronym comes from knitting circles and normally refers to yarn, but also seems appropriate for Port drinkers. Alex did some quick computing at the table and determined that, in order ...

Re: Infantado Vintage Character

Look: Dark and purple-red. Definitely a Ruby Port. Nose: Red fruit. Mildly sour, but in a good way. I'd call it citrus, but that's not quite right. Taste: Red. Rather one dimensional, but easy to drink. It's nice, but that's all. Can't really find anything bad to say about it, but then again can't r...

Re: Old & Odd, Friday 7th November 2008, New York

My ranking for the evening, all things considered: 1952 Barros Colheita 1947 Barros Colheita 1896 Elviro Garcia "refreshed" Tawny (tie) 1938 Hooper (tie) 1942 Hooper 1944 Hooper Colheita 1932 Butler Nephew Infantado V.C. bottled in 1996 1873 Schofield My tasting notes deteriorated as the e...

Re: 1952 Barros colheita

Look: Lightly cloudy. Somewhat darker than the '47... more mahogany than light brown in its tint. Still a red drink, though. Nose: Some VA (but not much). Citrus leaning toward vitamin C tablet rather than any particular fruit. Taste: Very nice. Smooth but full. Citrus and acid like the Sandeman 20-...

Re: 1947 Barros colheita

Look: Lightly cloudy. Light brown tint, but not what I'd call tan. Still red though. Nose: Sourish, also some VA. Freshly dried apricots. Taste: Very briefly sour on first contact, then very nice. Swallow and it's gone, though - it just vanishes. Finish: Virtually none, though by the time I got to t...

Re: 1944 Hooper colheita

Look: Lightly cloudy, medium tawny color. Nose: Smokey with a very slight stale note to it. Taste: Smooth. Not as tangy as I normally expect a tawny to be. Very slight, very mellow taste of VA. Despite normally favoring Tawnies, this only ranked #6 for me just ahead of the Butler Nephew and behind t...

Re: 1942 Hooper

Look: Dark tawny, close to what you'd expect from a 10-yr old. Bright and clear in the glass - my favorite color of the night. Nose: Something minty and almost pungent, possibly wintergreen but soured. Damp, dry cedar wood. (That does make sense if you've ever had a wood burning stove.) Some alcohol...

Look: Very light for a VP, almost Tawny. (Between 10-yr old and 20-yr old in look.) Bright and clear in the glass. My second favorite color in the glass. Nose: "Same as '42 only weaker." Taste: Very smooth mouth feel. Marzipan, fades almost to vanilla. Soft, ripe raspberry. Finish: Typical...

Re: 1932 Butler Nephew

Look: Cloudy and almost orange. Looks much more like a tawny than a VP to me. Nose: Dying tawny. Something minty that Julian described as Spearmint. I lean more toward Eucalyptus but without the menthol or depth that Eucalyptus usually possesses. Taste: Madeira-like, but nicely smooth. Complex flavo...

Re: 1896 Elviro Garcia ‘Refreshed’ tawny

Look: Dark and cloudy, almost brown but with a faint deep purple or reddish hue. Ignoring consistency, it almost looked like BBQ sauce. Nose: VERY madeira-like. Strong and powerful. Taste: Not madeira-like at all, which was surprising considering the nose. Very smooth. Lots of red fruit, mostly stra...

Look: Faintly cloudy, medium tawny color. Lighting was poor, so nothing more specific. Nose: Soft sugars, and after a time sitting in the glass some smoke was also noticeable. Faintly madeira-like to me. Taste: Gone, some sour, not good. Very dry. Somewhat watery. Almost peaty like a scotch. To me i...

I had a grand time at the tasting! It was great meeting everyone and putting faces to userids, too. Thanks very much for the opportunity and I can't wait for the next one!

I'll post a longer review once I get back to Seattle, as well as my tasting notes. We had some interesting Ports!

The Colheitas should not need any real amount of decanting. Pop-n-pour at the restaurant, or decanting at home/hotel right before going to the restaurant should be fine IMHO.

It was rather funny watching some of the newscasts, though, as the talking heads desperately tried to make it sound like a race, all the while ignoring the elephant in the room that was the west coast. We knew within 15 minutes of the polls closing on the east coast that Obama had won, because he ha...

I believe that, many years ago, the Secret Service as much as admitted that they could not protect the President from someone who was willing to give his or her life. The only reason security works is because the criminals aren't fully commited to their cause and wish to live through it themselves (...

Re: Drinking old TAwny

Check the cork - if it is a normal, full size, driven cork then the bottles are probably fine. But if it is a T-style cork, then those bottles were intended to be consumed shortly after bottling and so probably haven't aged well. But you never really know... even a full-sized driven cork can be prot...

Re: Old & Odd, New York, Friday 7th November 2008

On a separate note, Julian's idea would work fine but I am more tempted by the 20 year old tawnies. I vote for a bottle of the Taylor 20-yr old at $120. Granted that's an outrageous price for the bottle, but we're already opening possibly 9 bottles of VP so having some tawny would be nice. I'm not ...
