Re: Port for when you are snowed in...
Los Angeles shuts down when it rains. The slightest hint of showers and we have "Storm Watch 2010" and all hell breaks loose  If it ever snowed here people would think the world was coming to an end. I hope you guys get out of this soon, but at least you've got a good excuse to stay...

To earn some of my port, you have to have had a week like the one I've just had.

Re: 1907 unknown vintage port
That's very interesting news. It is possible that it was a tawny, although that was not the impression that I had. My guess was that this was a private bottling and this particular bottle (or bottling) belonged to someone whose initials were WWW.

It just wasn't as well balanced as times I've had it before. My guess is just a bit of travel shock or perhaps an imperfect bottle.

1947 Cockburn vintage port
Decanted 30 minutes, a gorgeous looking deep-orange colour. On the nose it's mature, tertiary and smelling of a curious combination of rose hip syrup and cointreau. To taste, it is smooth, slightly dry and full of concentrated oranges. There is a fantastic leatheriness or meatiness just behind all t...

It's been a hard week
It's been a very hard and very long week at work and I'm so glad it's Friday. No working over the weekend, but next week is likely to be just as hard. So I have decided to treat myself tonight. I've just put a manly sized confit de canard in the oven and decanted the first bottle to come to hand fro...

you probably have a hidden little gem from the creation of the Union flag which makes it an army flag Army flag 5:3; real Union Jack is 2:1. Although the most common ratio is 1:2, other ratios exist. The Royal Navy's flag code book, BR20 Flags of All Nations, states that both 1:2 and 3:5 versions a...

I have nothing against the 2005 vintage - in fact, I do quite like it. The reason that I was suggesting it be left out was for no other reason than we might otherwise end up with too many very recent vintages.WS1 wrote:May I ask why you are not so fond of the 2005? I like this Vesuvio very much!

Wolfgang raises a good point - which 1970 wines have the folks attending who were born that year already drunk?
PS - Julian - I vote for the Fonseca 1985; it's at least 6 weeks since I last tasted one.

Which flag behind the admiral is the army flag? I would have said that the two flags were the Union flag and the NATO flag, neither of which I would have classified as army flags - but you probably have a hidden little gem from the creation of the Union flag which makes it an army flag. Over to you...

Re: 23rdFebruary offline @ The Crusting Pipe - Vesuvio vertical.
But I would agree that the Vesuvio '92 would be a fine port to drink at the Vesuvio vertical - are you attending? Source: you. Have you no more? If I do attend (which is unlikely), then of course. However, I will be at that cellar on Fri 29th Jan, and could collect it to be given to an attendee of ...

Re: 23rdFebruary offline @ The Crusting Pipe - Vesuvio vertical.
Subject to us being able to track down the missing vintages, can anyone think of a good reason not to make this a complete vertical from 1989 to 2007? Yes - it's excessive and would lead to bad habits being formed. People might start to think that it was normal to hold complete verticals and start ...

Re: 1 Feb 2010 - Crusting Pipe - Bring a bottle of Port
Why did you ask? I think there are solid reasons for D70, OBV70 and Ch85. The arguments for each should be considered. The V92 (source: ‘Mr. V.’) overlaps with a subsequent tasting ; and the F85 is too young. But each of D70, OBV70 and Ch85 is a sensible choice, and I don’t know for which I would v...

a theme like "Bring that weird Colheita" Hmm, that might be a little difficult for me. I only have one (known) colheita. Does only having one bottle of colheita make that a weird colheita ? Or I could bring a bottle of Croft Ruby port which was bottled to commemorate the coronation of Eli...

Re: 23rdFebruary offline @ The Crusting Pipe - Vesuvio vertical.
In a fit of enthusiasm and anticipation for this coming Vesuvio vertical, I had a quick trawl through the vintages which people have identified that they have available, and come up with the following list: DRT - 1994, 1996, 1997 WS1 - 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005 ARK - 1996 (having drunk all his 1994) CM...

Re: Alcohol and health
Adults in Scotland are drinking the equivalent of 46 bottles of vodka each in a year, a study has suggested. Something about this study seems suspicious to me. When I was in my teens growing up in Scotland my cousin and I used to be "barmen" at family parties. We had a large family so the...

Re: February offline @ The Crusting Pipe - Vesuvio vertical?
I've just checked my diary and I'm free on both of these dates.
So, it seems that you need to make a decision and we'll all plan around your decision. Might I suggest the 25th, so as to try and spread out this tasting from the one with Oscar (unless we combine the two)?

Re: 1927 Taylor vintage port
My opinion was that it was a cork issue that became apparent with air, but I should note that few other people at the table agreed with me. Most thought it a wonderful wine. It did have a magnificent colour and promised so much on decanting - but such is the life of a port geek.
