Re: Niepoort Garrafeiras
I've had 4-5 different vintages of Niepoort's Garrafeira and they are truly wonderful wines. Even though there is not much financial sense to make Garrafeira, I think many producers would be well served by creating them. They are special bottles that add legend to the legacy. If at a minimum, make t...

Re: Summarise a vintage, concisely
1983 is an odd vintage. It has a few ports that I really like (Warre, Graham, Dow, Ramos Pinto) and many that I am very happy to drink. I've generally found this vintage is priced lowe than most of its peers and as I result I've accumulated a fair amount for future drinking. I wouldn't describe it ...

Re: 1963 Croft
At least in my region... 1963 Croft is most easy to find bottle of the vintage. They must've made a sh**load that vintage. Same for '70 Croft. I think also that Croft was a much more popular brand back then, compared to now.

I'll add another: 1952: Some excellent colheitas Qualify 'some': which? I was thinking of Grahams 1952 Single Harvest Tawny and the Niepoort 1952 Colheita, though there might be others too; but I think for the purposes of this list, we're trying to reflect the year overall rather than highlight spe...

Re: Four bottles of port handed down by my Portuguese granda
Those ports are not ones for aging a long time. I would not expect much if you were to drink them. They may be "down the drain" port, but the labels are quite cool and worth removing.

I am pleased how these have evolved that last few years. They were spirity and rough a while back, but the last one I opened was quite a surprise.

Re: Concerts/Gigs/Shows
Saw Judas Priest with Steel Panther last month. Great show Rob Halford can still sing, but doesn't have the vigor he use to. Had to go back stage after every song for a glass of water. Top notch video imagery and played all their hits. Very tight and on-rhythm along with great guitar solos. Good sho...

Re: Advice please Gentlemen
Reading this old thread I'm not cringing as much as I feared.. Interesting to note the rollercoaster reportage on '77 - now coming right and set fair IMO. I've been quite please with the evolution of G77. The recent bottles I had this summer should make people re-evaluate this vintage. Not has hot ...

You have to evaluate the selling shop on wine-searcher. How does their site look, how is their inventory? Is it within driving distance, etc... Are they high-end wine shop or just a ‘Package Store’ as they say in my parts...

How many bottles in total do you plan? I'd consider magnum of something from 1985 like Graham, Fonseca, Taylor or Dow. 1970 is a sure thing for basically any brand you can get.

I call them magnum's with a bonus. They originally sold for about the same price as a magnum, so those extra glasses were the "bonus"!LGTrotter wrote:Come down off the fence, do you call them tappit hens or tregnums?mosesbotbol wrote:I have a couple of 1963 Dow's in this size.

Re: Fonseca 1985 VP
The best Port to drink from 85 for me right now would be Graham 85, but the one with the greatest potential would be Fonseca. Axel I am digging both Ramos and Ferreira '85, along with Gould Campbell. Not the biggest names, but some of the nicer drinking ones right now. Have a few bottles of '85 Nie...

Re: Fonseca 1985 VP
I recently picked up a case of Fonseca 1985 that was stored in a cellar since it was released. No rush to start drinking them, but can't wait. The 1970's ports from the same cellar are utterly amazing so the expectation on the on the F85 is quite high. The price was like stealing candy from a baby. ...

1994 Dow and 1991 Croft are the two that first come to mind that could be properly enjoyed today. I would hold off if you have other stuff to drink.

Re: Bordeaux Recommendations
My approach to the 2009/2010 debate is quite simple. I have to draw a line somewhere to avoid spending too much cash on wines that might not expire before I do. 2009 seems as good a place to draw that line as any. I will continue to excerpt the full force of my legendary willpower to avoid buying 2...
