Port bonds for christenings / weddings etc.

A nice development - the need for which has previously been discussed on this board. Interesting that they have chosen to stick to Malvedos (if Graham full blend is not declared) - it might have been nice to offer Vesuvio as an optional fallback instead but I can see why that might be more difficul...

Is there any current plan for red wine over dinner? If not, should there be (rather than ordering at greater expense from the list on the day)?

Re: Re-testing The Bung Hole, Wed 29th Oct 2014, Croft

Playing Devil's advocate, should we choose a theme that enables more of the attendees to bring their own bottles? Even something like the very first Bunghole tasting (link)

Re: New port barrel help

New wood also absorbs a lot more at the outset I think it is more likely to be the smallness of the barrel, giving a larger surface area of port in contact with the barrel. Is this what you meant to say? A larger barrel will have a larger surface area of port in contact with wood. Presumably this is...

Not the boardroom. It is the big room that would struggle to hold 36 of us.

A mixed case of 12 well-stored 1977s is interesting, particularly as it includes a Taylor and Fonseca. One of the various regional auctions (Straker Chadwick, Tennants etc.) would also be worth a look.

Re: Ramos-Pinto: Tuesday 21st October 2014

A pity, though with hindsight the arrangements at the Bunghole were too good to last and we should be thankful for the 2.5 years we have had there. I suspect we will have to get used to paying more to hold central London tastings in future...but since the weekly event schedule of 2012 has dropped of...

Barros normally put "colheita" or "matured in wood" for colheita/tawny, but then they also normally put "vintage port" if VP. Presumably not always on bottles destined for non-English speaking markets Indeed; I did not mean that it would always be in English. So in ter...

Re: Tappit Hen or Tregnum? - Poll

My understanding is that EU rules stipulate that wine bottles (other than miniatures) must be multiples or simple divisions of 75cL. Spirits though, are still mostly sold in 70cL I notice.. I think this only applies to wine bottles between 100ml and 1500ml (or 2000ml for spirits)...so larger format...

What are Corkr fine wine like to deal with? Anyone know? I have had no problems when ordering from them. Re: Is anything from the '90s worth opening today?

It is much harder psychologically to declare a £60 bottle duff. Excuses are made. Reputation intact. I don't think this chimes with my experiences. Dow 77, various 85s and Niepoort 97 (amongst others) all spring to mind as having less than stellar reputations despite falling into that category. If ...

Re: 3-4 value ports for a nice beginner-oriented tasting

Vesuvio 96 seems still to be available very cheaply in both the UK and US market and is a very good port (in my opinion) that is nicely approachable now even if still slightly on the young side. Vargellas 2001 is not in a good drinking phase in my view, though your mileage may vary

Re: Is anything from the '90s worth opening today?

I really like Vesuvio 98 for current drinking - probably my favourite VP from the 90s for drinking right now. Of course, there are some Warre / SW LBVs in good drinking windows if you are not thinking solely of VPs. I have also had good luck with 99s - all of Sandeman Vau, Passadouro and Niepoort Se...

A query on TN titles - I had always thought the "NV" prefix indicated a port that was not of a single vintage (ie TWAIOA, basic/reserve ruby, basic/reserve tawny, crusted etc) rather than "Not VP"
