Re: Taylors Scion

Refreshing is a practice still in use today. There are numerous ways of topping off an old barrel, or not.

Re: Taylors Scion

2-4% evaporation is the average annual rate in the majority of Port lodges in Gaia. However, we know that this Scion juice came from casks found in a private cellar in the Douro. Evaporation there is typically higher than in Gaia, as the RH and temperatures are less stable, certainly back in the day...

Re: Vintage countdown

As I was on the record early on in 2007 directly after experiencing the harvest and stating that I felt it was a worthy year for a general Port declaration, I will be as bold and say that I seriously doubt that will be the case in 2010. Tom's wish for 2009 is seemingly even less likely as producers ...

Re: Run up in port prices?

I have a slightly different take on this. I do agree Port prices have gone up, although that seemingly began during the 4th quarter of 2009. However, the same can be said for Burgundy, Bordeaux, CA Cabernets ... especially from Napa and also Oregon & Cali Pinot Noir ... amongst many wine types t...

Re: Nacional Tasting BBR 25th Oct

Chris, I have a feeling that has more to do with the 1960 and 1978 versions of Nacional. The 1960 is the better of the two, imo and the last two times I had it ... gave it 89 and 91 points, fwiw. The 1978 is not a great vintage but did produce a nice Vargellas and Dalva VP along with some fine Colhe...

Re: Nacional Tasting BBR 25th Oct

Sounds like a really fun tasting. Too bad the 1966 and 1970 are not included, but otherwise a solid lineup. There was a factual error when it was mentioned that 1,000 bottles of Nacional are produced annually. With 250 cs. produced on average ... for those in attendance, have a great time. Nacional ...

Re: TCA in Port but not Madeira

I hope this may shed some light on the topic for you guys. Irradiation is not new to corks and has been around for years. Regardless of that process, TCA taint can and does occur. Can it minimize the effect, yes ... but eradicate it ... definitely not. I've been to cork producers in several countrie...

Re: 12 October - 55 @ 55 Tasting

Glenn, You are forgetting that the prior week you will be trying a ton of Ports. If there is ever a time where you will be well fortified and prepared for the likes of 2 bottles, I'd imagine this would be it. One or two bottles of 1955 sounds good to me either way. Unfortunately, it looks like adopt...

Re: Corked/Spoilt Ports - Name and Shame

A few points of clarification: a. the last bottle of 1983 Cockburn I opened from my own cellar was in very fine condition. Not as great a bottle as some I've had, but with extended decanting ... zero signs of TCA. Back in the 1990s, I considered this the Port of the vintage. Not anymore. b. the 1983...

Good food, modest service, great collection of Douro wines and nothing special re: Port wine. Worth a try if you are a frequent visitor to the region, but there are much better options on either side of the price scale.

Re: Is '92 the most over-hyped vintage?

Do the 1991 vs. 1992 whenever you want but in 2012, there should be a 100 year retrospective of the 1912 Vintage Ports (& Madeiras), preferably on the 100th anniversary of the infamous sinking of the Titanic in April 1912. I'd fly over for that with a bottle in hand! :D Heck, I'd even help in or...

Re: Is '92 the most over-hyped vintage?

I have very much enjoyed the read in this thread. Great info. For a USA historical perspective, I still have my original prices paid "pre-release" for the 1992s: Taylor $27 Fonseca $27 Quinta do Infantado $29 Warre's Cavadinha $29 Cockburn's Canais $20 Niepoort $29 Martinez Eira Velha $15 ...

Ben, Sorry we're gonna miss one another by about a week. I hope you have a great time and especially in the Douro. I have had my share of Australian stickies as well as what they DO CALL, Port. Additionally, I prefer the Chamber's to the Campbell's products, but that is just me and I do enjoy Campbell's too. Above and beyond most of the the great Rutherglenn juice is the exalted Seppelt Para Port "100 year ...

Er ... check the newspaper, Spain was downgraded and yet the Euro maintained its value for the day. Even the overnights did not show much movement which seems odd. So with Greece, Portugal and Spain on the ropes (several others are pretty weak too) ... the Euro should be dropping faster than it has ...

Re: Dow's 2007 Vintage - 100 PTS Wine Spectator

Given the listing earlier in the thread, it was impossible to ignore that all VPs mentioned, came from 3 companies. There are lots of fine Ports in that list in 2007, but there are others that deserve to be there too. As a comparative exercise and learning experience, I enjoyed seeing the WS scores ...
