Re: Thursday 23rd April 2015 - 6 decades of Port Declaration

I'm suprised at the order of tasting, though I do recall it was the same at the Noval / Nacional tasting a few years ago (and I can see why - from the perspective of putting together a presentation - it makes sense).

Re: London stop over

Fortnum and Mason have a very nice wine section that you can sometimes find old and unusual bottles in. Hedonism Wines is supposed to be a fantastic place to visit, and not all of their prices are crazy. But for '55s far and away your best is ordering online from someone like Peter Wylie, Richard Ki...

Re: 2012 Declarations

A well respected member of the trade (not in either the Symington or TFP camps) told me today that it was initially refused IVDP approval, and only won through on appeal I'm not sure that that is particularly significant in terms of the quality of the wine (as opposed to meeting some of the "c...

Re: Thursday 23rd April 2015 - 6 decades of Port Declaration

Besides, this might be the very first time that I've seen someone assert that the 20th Century refers to 1900 - 1999 so your claim seems hollow. It certainly isn't common usage for centuries or millenniums, and is only grudgingly true for decades because no one refers to the 197th or 200th decade. ...

No wait now I get it; 1960 doesn't exist because it's got a nought at the end and 1970 belongs in the decade with all the sixties in it. Or something. Berrys...

Re: Thursday 23rd April 2015 - 6 decades of Port Declaration

Some claim that because there was no year "0", centuries run from 01.01.xx01 to 31.12.xy00. I suppose you can therefore make a case that 1970 is the last year of the sixth decade of C20, and therefore 6 decades of VPs are represented at the tasting (...other pedants may then point out that...

Re: Cockburn 1957

Broadbent mentions a "late-bottled" 1957 Cockburn ("unimpressive" when tasted in mid-60s) in his book. In his notes, that could easily mean a bottling done 3-years after harvest rather than "LBV" (and late 50s / early 60s was presumably on the cusp of when practices reg...

Re: Wed 29th Oct 2014, Davy’s at Plantation Place, Croft

Surely you didn't... especially on our first visit? Maybe it sounds worse in the retelling! Buying Croft 85 is taking a known risk. But equally, Davy's should know/expect that selling it OTC in their pubs is also a risk. So both sides are equally guilty of taking advantage of the other!! As soon as...

Adding Croft (or Fonseca for that matter) would mean that the pre-00 VPs were represented solely by TFP.

Re: Mayson's Top 20 Buys

This is in decanter magazine right? So while it may be aimed at people who don't drink much port, I struggle to see that it is aimed at novices. Presumably he wanted to highlight 1970 (alongside 85 and 94) as one of the top vintages of the latter part of C20, as well as having at least one "mat...

Re: Mayson's Top 20 Buys

Niepoort 70 is only listed from one supplier; it's such a wilfully obscure recommendation that if I didn't believe in the utter probity of all concerned I'd almost say that someone was trying to shift a job lot. And £141.66 is NOT good value for a 1970. I've only had Niepoort 1970 five times, but f...

The Waitrose "buy 6, 25% off" sale has started which means that, amongst others, the Waitrose own-label 2011 VP (De La Rosa) is down to £22.50 per bottle all-in.

If FG = F with respect to blend and assuming the method, care and skill required for producing both wines is the same for the two, what does that say about the margins for the two wines? In a way SFE is at least consistent in that they price the SQVPs in a similar way to their ordinary VPs, albeit w...

Veilingsylie's in Antwerp is a very well established auction house for wine that may be a good option for selling or even just getting an estimate - I bid for port there fairly regularly and find that bottles are not going cheaply! I think BBR did that already with the 2011s. I did ask whether anyone had gone for it, but did not receive a reply. Wasn't this simply an offer of a mixed 50 cases of port rather than a pipe with your name on it? Yes - I was responding to the part where Derek clarified that he wasn't thinking about...

Indiana as a comparator for the size of Portugal seems to be quite common on the net (being very slightly bigger than it). Also Maine (which is slightly smaller). A bit like the comparisons between the size of France and Texas http://money.cnn.com/2010/03/24/markets/thebuzz/index.htm?postversion=201...

Clarification: I did not mean "a pipe" in the traditional sense, but was thinking of 56 dozen being offered at a preferential price en primeur to those inclined to purchase in that volume for a descendant. I think BBR did that already with the 2011s. I did ask whether anyone had gone for ...

Perhaps the Syms are restricting this to Graham brands to gauge interest so it is possible that it will expand into other brands if successful, or if other producers follow the lead and bring out similar products. Perhaps, but having reflected further I would hesistate to use this at the moment not...
