Re: Port Suggestions for a Bris

Congratulations!! Wonderful news. Parenthood is loads of fun--and a challenge.

Now you have to hope for a good harvest for this year so Elijah will have proper things to drink in 20-100 years.

Re: ACPT Port tasting, NYC, March 9, 2013

I got a distinct berry flavor off the FG76--actually my notes were it smelled and tasted of berry and berry bushes--(aroma from a berry patch in the sun). On none of the others, including the other Bagas, did I get berry as a powerful component. Many of the ports were Pop and pour (I think only the ...

That was a great night--so nice to meet everyone! Thank you.

Given how youthful so many were, we should revisit this tasting in 5-10 years. :)

Re: "Proper" port decanters?

it doesn't matter at all!provided it is big enough to hold the bottle
I disagree somewhat. Too many decanters are terrible for the last pour or two--mainly I find the ones with long straight necks are the worst--the wine just flys out. Teardrop shape/ships decanter usually the best IMHO..

Re: half bottles of vintage port for novice?

Glassware: Instead of the Reidel (which are very nice and expensive but also break easily IMHO) why not just get a case of Marjorie Lumm's glasses for $2.75 a stem (#9909). With shipping the lot would be $130-$135. Then you'd have enough for your group to do proper tastings.

Re: half bottles of vintage port for novice?

Half bottles: the consensus is that they tend to mature a faster than regular size bottles although two 1/2 bottles are more expensive than a regular bottle (and larger size formats also are often more expensive per 750 bottle, ounce, whatever unit of wine you use). I find 1/2 bottles great when its...

Re: ideas for port tasting for novices for self-education

There, isn't that clear now???

I'm trying to hook him up with a wine rep who did an across the board tasting for us--a lot of entry level stuff, a 10 year tawny, and LBV and a VP. However, the producer is not a top of the line one.

From what is being described, you could do this for about $200 to $300 including a little bit of food to nosh.

Re: Recommendation for port purchase in/for New York

Gary's Wine in Wayne or Bernardsville Wine Store in Franklin Lakes (forget the name)...not the best prices but has a walk in "cellar" with many fine bottles--you'll pay serious retail but at least the provenance looks far better than most Bottle King (they have numerous stores) is good for new stuff...

Re: ideas for port tasting for novices for self-education

Dear Novillero; G-Man is correct...I have a group of port friends, most of whom are novices, and we tend to taste in groupings as you describe. Generally, it is not ideal to switch around from tanwies to rubies to whites without a little interlude between. Also, sticking to one house is a great idea...

If there is room, I may be able to make it. G-Man--is there room for a New Jerseyan or two?

I would either have to adopt a bottle or acquire--please advise.

The Wine Library is a great place to visit. Also, Short Hills Wine--their store is not much, but some of their by the case orders are pretty good. http://www.shorthillswine.com/ Lastly. Lisbon Liquors (G-Man cites above) has a good selection. There are others, and depending on geography could cite t...

it would be helpful to know the provenance of the bottle and also where you are in the world (it can be general).

Thanks.

Re: Port in a (franken)Storm?

Took a licking, not as bad as some--wind tore off about 20-25 slates off my roof and gave me a few holes which of course leaked into some bedrooms. A portion of a solid cedar fence is down and a big oak tree in the back woods had the top ripped off. Various folks around town lost cars, pools, porche...
