Re: NY - October 2011?

Date would be Friday 28th as we fly out on Saturday 29th. Venue can be restaurant or other similar venue if they allow port to be brought with us. I've not been to NY so I don't know the distances involved, if there's a good venue that works for all for the Friday, please can you suggest? Thanks, Nick

NY - October 2011?

I'm in NY visiting my Bro in late October. Anyone up for a get together? We're already a 4 ball (2 serious porters, 1 newcomer and 1 visitor). No knowledge of the area so have no venue and will need to source stock but would be good if we can arrange.

Post or PM please.

US / UK port purchasing

My brother and fellow port lover has moved stateside, in fact he's in New York. He says that port is fantastically expensive over there and not worth buying. Is that the case or is he not looking in the right places? Every day VP would be the main tipple. I'm planning on going to see him in a few mo...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

Wish I'd seen the Tesco Henley LBV at £4 a bottle post a few weeks ago - I'd have been straight down there!

If anyone sees anything like that, is there a way we can ping out PMs or similar to alert thirsty members?

Re: Latest buy

I purchased the QdN 2003 in the end, I managed to justify it to myself that near perfect provenance is worth the premium. Currently looking at 6xVesuvio 1997 at just under £26 per bottle. My aim is to acquire 600 bottles my my 30th birthday. I'm currently on 154 with 7 years to go giving an average...

Re: 19 September in London at The Steak Exchange

You guys make me smile! (b) It is, in your own opinion, "Good Port"; and you also suggest 77 or 70. So by definition, that isn't going to be good port - that's going to be stunningly good port. My cellar consists of "weekday port" (NV), "occasion port" (80s or early 90s...

Re: Food and Port

My partner and I (she's not really into port but managed to partake of all of them on our recent Douro trip), tried pairing things with port the other week... 5 different Fonseca ports, a Sandeman white, a Sandeman 20 YO tawny, Dow's midnight and Sainsbury's ruby port were all tried with a crusted p...

Midweek tipple

I'd love to open a VP every night but realistically, and especially in the current climate, that isn't an option. OK, so you could say that it is helping Portugal out of its economic problem but bankrupting yourself to save a nation? Anyway, I digress. Looking for a midweek / bang for buck option he...

Re: Port for sale at auction

Those 66 on eBay would have been tempting if I'd seen them in time! After way too many months unemployed, I'm finally working again so I may be in the market for a case of every day drinkers. If anyone knows of an auction with some likely suspects, please advise in this thread or via PM. Many thanks...

DRT - didn't go up from Pinhao to Pocinho, wanted to get to Porto. Both - agree, Porto leaves a reminder in your heart. Will be going back especially now that my "I'm going with him but I don't drink port" girlfriend now likes port. We came back with 3 bottles of Passadouro ruby, numerous ...

Re: Finally booked it - Porto trip is on

Hi Ben and Jacob,
Very many thanks for your top tips - I'm really excited about the trip and don't want to spend it in the wrong places so please keep your suggestions coming so that I can get plenty of culture (and of course plenty of port!).

Thanks all,
Nick

If it isn't a one off when you purchase a case, could you post your source in case others wish to join in? Clawhit - where did you the Martinez and the SW? Re: Port for sale by retailer

So perhaps a different tasting could be on the basis of "must be vintage, who's got the least good bottle"? Excluding spoils obviously. There have been many verticals and horizontals I've watched build up that include some marvellous bottles but never yet have I seen one about those embarr...

Only a hundred yards or so up the hill underneath Charing Cross is Champagne Charlie's. Looks like a dive, you can buy bottles of champagne and bottles of port for fairly sensible prices.

Highly recommended.

Finally booked it - Porto trip is on

Following the recommendations from members on here (especially DRT - huge thanks), we're off to Porto in a couple of months. Never been to Portugal at all, so any tips gratefully received. We're heading straight from the airport to Quinta de Passadouro unfortunately arriving after dark so we'll miss...
