Re: Port for sale by retailer

I know it is poor planning to mention a port on the forum before buying it but I note that the Wine Society is offering 2000 LBV Warre at £23/bottle. Not an absolute steal but it has a few more years on it than most of those available in supermarkets and the like. They have probably been reading Ale...

Re: Decanter - Jan 2018 - tasting of 78 x 10 & 20 yr old Tawny Ports

I buy the odd one (Decanter) in hard copy but I am currently sulking about their paywall. One of those irritating ones where it is far from clear whether you will be allowed to look at the article until you have clicked on it. Then if it is of any interest you are not. All the advertorials are of co...

1983 Graham

I have not had this port for about 20 years, it used to sell for pence at a local wine shop and I bought a few. I didn't think much of them and drank them young. an inexpressive wine with not much fruit was my sense. All these years later I like it rather more. Another atypical Graham, it does not h...

Re: Kopke LBV 1981 in Magnum, collector's item?

I think that is a very handsome bottle. I don't know the wine but it has several points in it's favour. Firstly it is in a magnum. A large bottle gives it the best chance to age well. Secondly the small print at the bottom suggests it will throw a deposit which bodes well for it to be (hopefully) no...

Mimolette. Or Montgomery's Cheddar. Sharpham's Rustic. Lord of the Hundreds, if they still make it. Parmesan, the older the better. Cheese is terrific.

I am a little surprised that this seems to be the first note I have written on this wine. Looking back at my notebooks I have only 4 notes, although I could have sworn I have had it many more times than this. Anyway, to the wine. On the first night it was rather as I think of it, soft and sweet. A b...

Interesting, I have been thinking of the Cockburn. But perhaps if I was to buy something young I should wait for the '16s.

Warre 85. Better than I remember it, but no cigar.

Re: Glass Opacity

In answer to question 1 I would say that as the glass has got darker the lights have got brighter. I find that a fierce LED cuts through most glass, although I have not tried this with Vesuviuo bottles. I have also for the most part given up shining light through the bottle while decanting. I use a ...

No backstory of previous tastings but this is a port which I remember with much fondness as one of my first tentative steps in the way of port nearly 30 years ago. Lovely to hear it is still humming along.

Re: Port Barrel Storage in Hot & Humid Weather

I wonder if Pete is going to be using Aussie ports for this. In which case the example of Seppelt fortified wines that are kept in tin sheds in the outback (I believe) may show that while he may not get what we would think of as port in the northern hemisphere he may get something uniquely Australia...

1977 Croft

This has a Morgan Furze shipper label, as distinct from another stash I have with import label from the 'Dam. I think these bottles are better than the ones from the Netherlands. Looked a bit darker than I remember this wine, decidedly red and clear, good colour. Nice on the nose when first opened, ...

I have been looking at 3 packs of this. My issue with this port is not with investment potential which does not concern me, rather that I will not get to drink it at anything like maturity. But of all the super cuvee ports this would be the one I would like to try, Graham being the port which got me...

I think this is 'Skeffington', which from my own limited experience is very good value for money. I have not had this particular port but have been tempted, especially when M&S do their buy 6 get 25% off offer. My own experience of Skeffington is that it is a decided cut above most BOB supermark...

A Gould Campbell 1980. One of those recently released by the newness of the cork. Good wine though, very dark and could do with another ten years.

Hello and welcome. I would like to agree with Flash that starting young in getting a cellar together is a good plan. If you buy sensibly even if you decide to become teetotal then you will be able to sell the wine and recoup most of your money, add a bit of luck and you might even make some money, b...

Re: Hunt Roope & Co question

I have no idea why they would post these (what look like) quite small samples to England, especially when they would presumably have had an agent and all the trimmings in London. Perhaps it is the Beaujolais Nouveau of it's age. I can only really see them doing this with vintage port. Probably a bar...

2011 Quinta da Senhora do Convento

I bought six of these and hid them and then went back and bought one more, just to see. A very deep colour, packed to the rim and staining the glass purple as I swirl it with a density that seems visibly different from most ports. Very long legs to the top of the glass. The nose is minerals underlai...

I too wish I knew about sherry, I drink a small amount from time to time, rather shamefully I rather like sweeter styles (I have a bottle of Williams and Humbert Dry Sack open, which confusingly is not dry). I think that the date aged wines are a relatively new invention, and I sense a slight sneeri...

Since it was my wife's birthday last week (turning 40) I opened the following bottles as a small port tasting for our wine- and portliking friends & family: - Quevedo 40 yo Tawny (2012 bottling); - Dalva 1977 Colheita (bottled 2014); - Warre 1977 Vintage Port; All showed very well, and it was a...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

Browsing Marks and Spencer's today I notice they have an own brand 2011 port. It looks like Skeffington and at £26 it is not a bad price. They did a 25% off if you buy 6 recently (and interestingly 20% off 3 bottles) which would put it under £20/bottle which they are bound to repeat sooner or later....
