Re: Software that makes placemats

Broader question: what should be the default? That leads to a question about our behaviour. ... I’m half-preferring acknowledging that we tend to do the second behaviour, so should have the second arrangement. Thoughts? I think there is a good argument for at least facilitating the latter behaviour...

Warre decanted. A huge (really huge) amount of sediment, both large and fine.
Mayer Sworder's English bottling, so EB/OB comparison with Julian's bottle may be viable, assuming we trust the label.

Re: Port for as a Christening Present

Given your statement that you're not too concerned with year, you have a number of options. I would suggest choosing a year where lots of houses declared, with a good reputation. I would also aim to ensure that the port will be at least >21 years old at the planned time of drinking, which is not dif...

Re: Wimbledon Doty: 1966 Horitzontal - Bunghole, June 27th -

Updated draft of the placemats . Any way we can arrange "D", "D,W" and "W" side by side? I can get the ‟D,W” between the D and W, even though, for five glasses, I prefer /RectangularDislocation to /Diamonds . But maybe, with five beside six, I prefer the latter, as th...

How did the traced line connecting the glasses appear? These were my custom use of the feature "MakePathConnectingGlasses" within Julian's postscript. And what is the correct way of including an external graphic (the makers' brands)? This is not a standard feature. I took a couple of phot...

For 69 we seem to be limited to TV69 and D69colheita ... There's a rather nice G69 colheita...plus the Prince of Wales "investiture port" is pretty good if you ever come across that. I had intended to include the Graham 69 colheita in my original post; I wasn't aware of the "investit...

Re: Wimbledon Doty: 1966 Horitzontal - Bunghole, June 27th -

Ni66 arrived today - nice looking bottle (bottling date is 69: 3yr post-harvest) Very interesting to me for birth year reasons; I've recommended a few friends to choose their "birth year" bottles based on bottling date rather than harvest where it improves the options. For 69 we seem to b...

Ni66 arrived today - nice looking bottle (bottling date is 69: 3yr post-harvest) - so time for a decision. Probably best way to determine is for those who want to open it to state the minimum number of other people that they'd consider sharing the cost with (EUR245 for bottle + EUR 35 express shipp...

Re: Software that makes placemats

Have you recommended (pseudo)code that will convert c0!c4 to four roots? No, sorry; I would use the formulae from there , and implement calculation of discriminant,p,q,S,Q,x (where c4..c0 are a..e and is only valid for non-zero a). The only optimisations I can see would be potential detection of no...

Re: Software that makes placemats

Seems like a good approach for this application provided division isn't too costly (LowerX + UpperX) ÷ 2 still has s division. (LowerX + UpperX) * 0.5 does not have a division in floating point calculation and would be the expected implementation to reduce computation for that case; (LowerX + Uppe...

Re: Software that makes placemats

how is xTolerance defined/determined?) I know that x is in points, so xTolerance is defined to be 0.01. An answer that accurate is good enough for me. If a maximum paper size can also be assumed, perhaps no greater than 3.5m in one dimension should be more than sufficient, then this would presumabl...

Assumptions: ∈ ℝ; continuous; starting points either side. No more. Desiderata include robustness, speed, and simplicity of code. Don’t need to reach the root, only for the bounds either side to be closer than xTolerance, when do a final unconstrained linear interpolation. Any possibility of multi...

Re: Software that makes placemats

Step one: write code to solve a quartic equation. Worrying, I think that I have devised an algorithm as good as Brent’s Method , but simpler, and not needing a pre-chosen x -step. Assume root bounded by LowerX and UpperX, with matching y values LowerY and UpperY. Interpolation would make the next x...

In general i'm not a fan of shipping bottles within the last month to six weeks before a tasting, since i think i have found more success from my own bottles when adopting WS1's regime. My vote would therefore be for a confirmed Dow 66 before chasing down EUR200+ bottles of unknown provenance from ...
