NV Barbeito Malvasia Reserve 5 Years
First of all, I have to make a confession (which I fear will lead to my eviction from TPF): I don't really like Madeira. The older a Madeira and thus the more Madeira-tasting, the less I like it (that's why I didn't want a second glass of the 20Y Terrantez we had at the O&C Club after last year'...

2004 Quinta do Noval LBV (unfiltered)
Bottled unfiltered in 2010. D+0h: quite a lot of deposit in the filter and in the bottle, smells of fruity currant D+7,5h: dark as ink, on the rim slightly purple red, smells of eucalyptus and raspberry, very smooth in the mouth, very full body, in the mouth currant, dark chocolate and acidity, in t...

2007 Croft LBV
Bottled filtered (as confirmed by Croft which I asked by e-mail). Pop'n'Pour: 1st glass: dark as ink, smells of gooseberry, medium body, not excessively sweet (almost half-dry in port terms), in the mouth gooseberry, sour cherry and a hint of marzipan, in the aftertaste acidity and a hint of marzipa...

Yes, Daniel, I'm delighted that Owen likes Italian wines.
But I'm more delighted that Owen likes acidity in his wine. This bodes well for the two bottles of Riesling he's going to taste in Summer.

Quinta do Noval 1715-2015
I just opened a Quinta do Noval LBV and while decanting I looked at the year of the founding of the quita which is printed in big letters on the lower part of the bottle. Then I realised that this year is Quinta do Noval's 300th anniversary. I wondered if there are any special releases, blends or fe...

Re: Latest buy
We'll done. Good purchases. Fair prices? I got the 04 from the German merchant for 22,50 Euro all in, but the 03 from the Portuguese merchant was more expensive due to higher shipping fees: 34,60 Euros (16 € for the bottle, 3,75 € for packaging and 14,85 € for the shipment). But since I wanted to c...

1 x 2004 Niepoort LBV

Re: Port production statistics
I think there are statistics in Richard Mayson's "Port and the Douro" (in the Appendix at the end). You might have a look if you can use these. (I don't have my copy at hand right now.)

Re: 1997 Château Poujeaux
Thank you for sending. Used today, for the first time, on Cr04 LBV. Very speedy when placed in a funnel (the plastic holder defeated me). You're welcome. I never use a funnel, so I just put the filter on the holder and pour. This is how you get the teafilter on the holder: you have to squeeze the p...

This might sound superficial, but as long as the juice inside the bottle is good I don't care what the outside looks like.

Derek's idea with the sand is really good (I didn't know that there was black sand. Probably from a beach with oil-spill ...). The sand would also work as ballast.

PPS: no harm in swapping the cable for one that is rated for exterior use. I think these cables are designed for rain (so some humidity once in a while), but not for constant immersion in water. Plus, even if you got thoroughly insulated cables (that stay thoroughly insulated), you would need a tho...

Re: Port-bottle table lamp
I think you could still paint it black. Then it would also look more like a full bottle of port. How would one paint it such that it looked like a bottle of Port with an into-neck fill level? Perhaps you could use Scotch tape to cover the neck so that it won't be painted black? Or you could use a s...

Re: Summarise a vintage, concisely
I just had a look at the older editions of Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book I have: between 1977 and 2002 there are no Vintage summaries. After that we have the usual "classic year" characterisation for 1970. 1970 is only mentioned as a declared year when Johnson talks about specific port h...

The media wouldn't have switched to bullet point journalism if people still had time to read. So this was just a move to adapt to an ever faster pace of living. (I don't want to defend this kind of crap journalism, I just want to point to the root of the problem.)

Re: Port-bottle table lamp
First of all a good use for this bottle. Regrets? • Perhaps the inside of the imperial should have been painted black (pour and shake, or spray). Seeing the wire is very Norman Foster, but really, who wants Norman Foster? I think you could still paint it black. Then it would also look more like a fu...
