Burmester Extra selected Vintage

We had a discussion about Burmester. On most vintage bottles from Burmester it says "extra selected" vintage. Is this just a generic expression to make it sound better, or is there vintage port from Burmester that is not "extra selected"?

Mac Duff's Port

Hello, I have bought a bottle of Mac Duff's Port Vintage 1948. Does anyone know anything of Mac Duff's? When I google I can find that C. da Silva has some tawnies called Mac Duff's but they look quite new and I do not know if they are related. I cannot find any older bottles (except this very bottle...

Quinta das Lamelas

Hi, We found a "new" house when visiting Porto in September: Quinta das Lamelas. Does anyone know anything about this house? At the Vinologia bar in Porto we found Q das Lamelas Vintage 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2012. I have seen tawny as well as white port from them too. Which vintages have t...

Re: White Port

Old white port is excellent! I usually drink vintage port and that is the most interesting to me. However, I have had the opportunity to try i few old white port. They usually age very well. I did try a few Dalva Golden white colheitas from the 1950's-60's and 70's and they were excellent. Actually ...

Re: what was LBV called in the past?

As of Jan 1, 1974, the new act states that all vintage port (and I believe all premium port) must be bottled in Portugal. The standard port that did not have to get approval from I.V.P. could still be shipped in bulk.

Re: what was LBV called in the past?

Is Vintage Reserve Port a Vintage or an LBV? or perhaps something else? Picture of Croft 1953 Vintage Reserve Port enclosed. As far as I know Croft didn't declare 1953. Although, they might have bottled some 1953 vintage for some specific customer anyway. Anyone who knows? I do not have a better ph...

Here is what Paul Symington has stated regarding this in the following ftlop thread. http://www.fortheloveofport.com/ftlopforum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7740&p=47545#p47545 Thank you Andy for the story of how LBV was developed. However, I believe that this new LBV category was implemented as an ...

I use spreadsheet and add a filter so I can filter on whatever I want- region, vintage, house or whatever is important. Very flexible, full control and free of charge. In addition, I have added automatic calculations to show for example average age or total number of bottles.

Re: what was LBV called in the past?

As for what it actually is... well, that's really up to you to decide. Today it would be called an LBV, but the 18-30 month bottling requirement for VP didn't exist back then (though I can't remember precisely when it came into being) so just about any Ruby Port could be labeled as VP and accuratel...

... or it might be from one of the other Boa Vista quintas, as suggested by other in this thread, although that is unlikely as the other Boa Vista quintas have not made any vintage port any other year.

How was it? The Offley Boa Vista 1966 is usually quite a good port.

This is about to form part of tonights consumption with a friend. Described as bottled by Charles Kinloch & Co Ltd of NW10. Is this Offley or was it independent at this point? Thank you. The bottle you have was bottled in the UK and at that time the bottler/merchant could basically put whatever...

what was LBV called in the past?

What was LBV called in the past? In the past before LBV / Late Bottled Vintage was an accepted and mandatory other designations were used. Does anyone know these alternative names for LBV? For example I have seen the writing "Reserve Vintage" but do not know if this is a way of saying that...

Re: Taylors 1944 Matured in oak casks bottled in 1985

Hi Mito, I would be surprised if it is not drinkable. Port from that time is usually very good. This is an old colheita, i.e. cask aged from a specific year. Old Colheitas usually keep quite well after opening. General recommendation from the Port wine institute is to consume within 1-4 months after...

Re: Wax on wax off

I use wax to seal the bottle if the cork have a small seeping leakage or if I have a bottle were the cork is exposed. It is not perfect but it stops further leakage to a good extent. If I do nothing in these cases, the content will likely leak and the remainder oxidize. Perhaps it is wise also to us...

Ok thanks, I used water as a medium, not to get it too hot, but the melting point of the wax is probably too close to water, that way it took too long time. I'll try some of your methods instead.

Re: No corkscrew? Don’t do this!

I thought the point of the sabering was that it only worked because of the pressure of the champagne in the bottle. How does it work with port? The saber does all the work but if you want the cut-off piece to fly in a nice arc in the are you need the pressure. If you are more concerned about gettin...

Why not? It seems to do the trick, or are you concerned that the shoe trick might disturb the sediment?

I have a friend who always saber old port.
