One question did occur to me. October was rather a modestly busy port acquiring month for me - what volume of port did I acquire? (To the nearest 1cl.)

It was October 2005 when we had that fantastic diagonal tasting.

So should October 2010 see a repeat of that great theme? Perhaps with Dow replacing Sandeman? If there's a positive response in this thread then I will start up a thread in the Offlines forum.

Perhaps it is to sit between the filter paper and the funnel in order to speed the flow of the wine through the paper

Please post us a picture of the bottles when you can. You may have just bought yourself 3 bottles of the never-before-seen Martinez 1931 - or 3 bottles of Martinez Ordinary Ruby (bottled in 1947). But whichever it is, we'd love to know!

Good grief. So I should be keeping all my old port bottles unrinsed so that I can refill them and sell them on as 15 years old port. More seriously, I wonder if maturing unfiltered ruby port in a bottle full of old lees would improve the taste of the port. I might buy a couple of bottles of an unfil...
