Re: Quaffings for Xmas
Having had some nice VP's around my birthday (1987 Warre Qta da Foz, and 1977 Pocas J), all I have left for X-mas is a 1991 Vargellas VP. Otherwise I'll be breaking my VP-year-limit for this year (which I installed only last year, so to be breaking this already will probably show my lack of VP-willp...

Re: Which bottle to choose?
Gerwin, From your description it is possible that the cork on the first bottle isn't being pushed out but might never have been pushed all the way into the neck. If this is the case, and with the fill level you describe, it is likely to have a perfect seal. The way to tell is to remove the capsule ...

Re: Which bottle to choose?
I would have to taste both first to let you know without doubt. But if I had to make a punt I would go for the lower fill despite the cork positioning. Thanks for your advice for now! I'll try and see if I can make out any other differences between the bottles, but if not, I will indeed go for the ...

Which bottle to choose?
I've a question. This weekend I am planning to open a Croft 1955 VP. I have aquired two bottles of this wine at an auction earlier this year. One bottle has a cork that is slightly pushed out of the bottle (at one side only). The cork seems to be coming out of the bottle by about 2 milimeters at one ...

Re: Drop stop discs
On return of our vacation to Portugal two weeks ago, we came by an Auchan Hypermarked in Lille (France). There I bought three packs of dropstops (not the brand, but the own Auchan brand of it) of 10-pieces each, at € 3,95 (per ten). Haven't tried them yet, but they're thesame dimensions as the origi...

9x Osborne 1992 VP :? (no idea how these will turn out, I've got one on deathrow for next week when I'm organising a little wine tasting) at auction a couple of weeks ago (got them delivered last week). They all do look to be in very good condition, which at least gives some hope that they have been...

Decanted at 13.00, first glass enjoyed at 21.30. Slightly damaged capsule, tiny sign of some seepage. Cork came out wel, in one piece, it was fully saturated though. Color: Lightred in the center of the glass, towards the edge of the glass getting lighter onto almost transparant at the rim. It has a...

1937 Pinto White Colheita (bottled 1973)
Bottled in 1973. Bottle states (French label): Blond Doré (golden blond), Demi-sec (semi-dry) (never seen this statement on port before, have any of you?) Opened it up by means of my port tongs, decanted and served directly, at slightly below cellar temp (about 10,5 Celcius). Colour: golden amber, t...

Re: What do you know about this Port??
Yesterday opened up this bottle, in celebration of my birthday in the company of my dad, my wife and two wine- and portloving relatives. Opened it up by means of my port tongs (what else 88) ) which went great, even the cork is now still in quite good shape! And thankfully, it showed beautifully!! I...

Re: What do you know about this Port??
Thanks for the suggestions guys!
I will let you know how it turned out.
The date for execution is dec. 14th. I will serve it at celler temp, about 11C. Given it´s age I will probably decant the bottle, but I reckon that it does not need a lot of decanting time. Any thoughts on this one=

Re: What do you know about this Port??
The time is about to come to open up this bottle and to see if it indeed is a white colheita. Since I have no expercience yet with old white colheitas (as a matter of fact, this will be my first experience with one), what would be the correct serving temperature (in Celcius) for an aged white Colhei...

NV Kopke Tawny 40YO (bottled 1980)
Won at auction. Kinda special given the fact that this one was bottled in 1980 (so this has got some serious bottle ageing as well). I was hoping for the best of course (this bottle was the worst looking one from the lot, seemed to have suffered quite some seepage) . Again this TN is from memory, so...

Didn't take notes, so from memory. Here goes: Nice colour, still quite deep red, lightening up to a little orange at ...

Re: Latest buy
That's a nice purchase Gerwin. I'm interested how the 40YO will turn out after 30 years in the bottle. Surprisingly , it was simply excellent! considering it was the worst looking bottle from the bunch (quite some seepage it seemed) it was amazingly tasty. I opened it last Friday (28th Oct), on the...
