Re: 1970s, Thu 02 Nov 2017, Boot & Flogger

Given what a fabulous vintage 1970 is, I have to say that it's a very poor show that no-one has posted any tasting notes - however brief. Surely in years to come when web-archaeologists dig through our pages we want them to find what we thought of these fabulous wines on this particular evening?

Re: 1927 Croft

Recorked by Tom Archer, upper shoulder fill. Light ochre-brown colour, looking pale and tired. Gentle nose, smelling slightly sour, reminding the nose of gentle sweet lemon oil, grown fat on Douro sunshine; hints of smoke mixed in with the lemon. Warm biscuit and masses of orange show on the palate....

1964 Niepoort Garrafeira (bottled 2014)

A bonus half bottle shared by the decanting crew at the 1977 horizontal on 19th December 2017, courtesy of Tom. Decanted into a half bottle in 2014, shortly before Dirk's 50th birthday dinner in his cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. A greenish shade of brown, the colour of polished olive wood, 20% opaqu...

1963 Burmester

Dark orange in colour, 30% opaque; not looking like a vintage port but more like a 10YO tawny. Oxidised nose with butterscotch and rhubarb; disappointingly flat. Neutral entry, bringing little flavour. The mid-palate shows some rhubarb acidity and some pleasant buttery and toffee flavours. The acidi...

1985 Taylor

Deep red but not youthful. Muted nose, some warm fruit on the nose but very little. Fruit on the impact with candied strawberry and hints of icing sugar. Sweet, candied and fruity mid- and late-palate. A warm aftertaste with fragrant fruit; a great length showing ghosts of the tannins and nice late ...

1992 Ramos Pinto LBV

Bottled in magnum in 1996. Made mainly from grapes grown in Bom Retiro. Deep brick red colour with a centre that is still opaque. A wonderful nose, full of soft rich fruit and flower perfume, a bouquet which could be sniffed for hours. A little stiff on the palate on entry, with soft tannins and lot...

1983 Ramos Pinto

Mature brick red in colour with an opaque centre. A lovely nose of fruit; fruit which is sweet, ripe and round. Gentle tannisn sit on the palate, wrapped in lovely sweet fruit; soft but with the tannins underneath. Delicious fruit that is sweet and slightly candied on the aftertaste. 92/100. 05-Dec-...

2000 Quinta do Noval Colheita (bottled 2017)

Bottled 2017. Much more red in the colour of this port than the two older coheitas shown alongside. Lots of heat on the nose, mixed in with figs and almonds. Hollow flavoured entry but smooth texture, followed by delicious toffee apples and caramel over a core of fragrant acidity. A nice aftertaste ...

1995 Quinta do Noval Colheita (bottled 2017)

Bottled 2017. Burnt ochre colour, 40% opaque. Almonds and a little VA on the nose. Lacking flavour at first on the palate, but thick honey flavours take over the mid-palate. The late palate is even better, deep and rich with lots of date but also a lively green apple acidity. Lots of layers of flavo...

1976 Quinta do Noval Colheita (bottled 2017)

Bottled 2017. A deep amber colour with a lovely nose of warm almond biscuits. Sweet and smooth with lots of tobacco and a great dose of acidity that shows mainly on the aftertaste. The palate is thick and sweet, very lively with lots of lime and tobacco. The aftertaste is big and full of oranges and...

2015 Quinta do Noval

With enough time to allow the port to develop and show its full potential, this revealed itself to be a fragrant, fruit dominated port that fully captures the delicacy and finesse of the fruit from this vintage — yet combines this with powerful acidity that promises a long life and fine grained tann...

2003 Quinta do Noval

Deep rose red in colour, 95% opaque at the centre. On the nose it is surprisingly lively, slightly aggressive and full of sweet but bruised strawberry with the bruised tone showing as a dirtiness to the scent. Oddly balanced entry, lots of spiky acidity giving an effervescent feel to the tongue but ...

Light orange ochre, 10% opaque. Warm, sweet and honeyed nose, very floral. Balanced and elegant on the palate; sweet and slightly fat with a hint of smoked orange. Light, elegant and very flavoursome. Hot aftertaste and such a long hot peppery finish. Lovely port. 92/100. 05-Dec-17. Decanted 2 hours.

1970 Graham

Mature mid-red colour, 30% opaque. A wonderful nose of spiced dried fruits, typical Graham's Christmas cake. Oddly hollow entry but the flavours build up beautifully. Light texture but full of flavour, of sweet soaked spiced and dried raisins and citrus zest. Really big on the late palate. Some heat...

1977 Gould Campbell

Deep red colour, 80% opaque. Mature nose, full of rich and sweet fruit yet with a hint of cloves. Equally rich and and deep on the palate, with a dry core to the lovely dark cherry fruit. Very youthful; lively and spritely with sweet red licorice. Young, but very good and with a long future. 93/100....

1963 Gould Campbell

Mature brick red with a bronze core; 30% opaque. Slightly oxidised nose with hints of rosemary oil and charcoal. Smooth on the palate, not thick texture but not thin either. Aromatic and fragrant with a lovely delicacy. Burnt sugar toffee apple on the late palate and a lovely acidity. A bit of a gap...

Pale orange rose colour, 20% opaque. A wonderful nose of spices and Christmas fruits. Delightful texture with rich and sweet fruit yet with life and acidic structure. Hints of licorice or aniseed on the late palate. Warm, slightly sticky aftertaste. Lovely candied cherry with Bertie Bassett black li...

Pale burnished gold, 20% opaque. A lovely warm smell of tobacco and poppies. Sweet, light and slightly hot. This has a nice mid-palate with more flavours showing. Good hot honey on the late palate. Very spicy and hot on the finish and a good length. 91/100. 05-Dec-17. Decanted 2 hours.

Really not showing well after 1 hour in the decanter; much improved after 2 but really noot hitting its stride until after 3 hours in the decanter. Mature rose red colour with only a little bricking evident; 60% opaque. Cedar and cinnamon infused fruit on the nose, smelling lovely and mature. Smooth...

Re: 1980 Calem Foz

Lightly toned pale rose red, 30% opaque. Soap and cranberry nose, quite pronounced and developed. A lovely cranberry entry, fiercely acidic with dusty tannins under the sour and under-ripe fruit. Big flavours and lots of acidity with ghosts of the soapy flavours at the end of the palate. A big soap ...

Re: 1970 Calem Foz

Bottled by the Wine Society. Mature appearance, 60% opaque. Unpleasant antiseptic nose, smelling like domestic lavender polish that is very offputting. The polish shows on the entry as a very unpleasant edge, and turns into a palate full of soap and washing-up liquid. There are hints underneath the ...

Re: 1966 Calem Foz

Bottled by the Wine Society. Mature red colour, looking to be nicely middle-aged; 50% opaque. Surprisingly youthful nose with gentle mace infused red fruit but with a touch of the astringency that mace brings. Sweet entry with lots of fruit that is initially quite simple. Air allows a lot of new fla...
