Re: Oz Clarke & SQVP

The above quote got me thinking. I cannot find an official definition of what constitutes an SQVP. Does such a rule exist? I don't think it does. SQVP is not a formal category, it's just one that we Port geeks use. As far as I know, all VP goes through the exact same process whether the final label...

Re: ACPT Port Tasting, NYC, 2/26/2010

I'm fine with one of our prior locations as well - Nick & Stef's or Uncle Jack's. Those were both great as far as I'm concerned... I was more worried about getting the right number of bottles for the number of people (or vice versa) than the actual where part of the equation.

Re: ACPT Port Tasting, NYC, 2/26/2010

Well it seems that our best bet is to go with what we have, plus a 1963. Adding a 1955 would be nice if one can be located in the US, but going younger than 1977 doesn't seem to be advisable based on the TNs that I've read. Even 1977 seems to be pushing it, but since you already have one we might as...

Re: 1970 Sandeman

Sounds like a lackluster showing. Had had this vintage many times in bottle and magnum format. Probably the last great Sandeman until '94. That doesn't bode well for our plan to hold a sandeman vertical... Our vertical is currently 1960-1977 isn't it? So we're not off by much... I think we'll be fi...

Re: MaryAnne Wiseman (SCP-DFF)

Plus washing the decanter and glass! Sixteen. Not to mention that 5 glasses of port is your "five-a-day" on the fruit-n-veg front. Now here is a thought: Ferreira 1830 has a distinctly green hue. If you drink that with a slab of beef does that count as having "greens"? Obviously...

Re: MaryAnne Wiseman (SCP-DFF)

I'd be interested in gathering the average cholesterol and triglycerides count from everyone on this forum. My cholesterol is moderately high due to heredity - everyone in my family has high cholesterol, but since they've been living into their 90s I'm not all that worried about it. My HDL/LDL rati...

Re: ACPT Port Tasting, NYC, 2/26/2010

I'm not that familiar with Sandeman, but just at first glance it seems like we should have a '63, too. I'll do some TN reading and see what's available at reasonable prices.

6 x 2007 Porto Rocha Vintage Port for $48/bottle.

Of the 25-ish 2007s that I've tried, I have the Porto Rocha tied for 3rd in the vintage. $48/bottle is a steal, especially in the US.

Re: daylight savings time

It appears that the servers have not switched off of daylight savings time. Either that or I'm required to change some setting in my profile twice a year, which seems needlessly fiddly. Which is it? The latter. TPF is set to GMT which changes at a different time from USA, so you have to chage your ...

Re: October 2010 - A Diagonal Repeated

In my mind, Taylor and Fonseca are the heavyweights from TFP while Graham and Dow are the heavyweights from SFE. Croft and Warre are excellent, but just not on the same level as the other four. Vesuvio is its own beast, but with time will likely be considered a heavyweight.

Re: Latest buy

2 x 1983 Cockburn for $85 each.

That's a great price (in the US) for a pristine bottle of such a highly rated Port.

That's an outrageous price if corked.

Current odds seem to hover around 50:50.

Knowing that you just recently had a KL70, and also knowing that it will be fine for many more years, I voted for the T70.

No need to exhaust your supply of KL70 just yet, especially since it is a bit of an oddity that might be more fun to share.

Please count me in. I am going to make every effort to be on the 2010 Harvest Tour, so if this is timed so that those of us returning to the US could stop off in London for the event on the way I'll most certainly be there!

Re: Port in Paris; October 23rd, 2009

Generally speaking, I thought they were all good. (My TNs have been posted in the appropriate threads.) I liked the S. Luiz the best, but only narrowly over the Quevedo. Both fall into my favorite age ranges - the S. Luiz is nearly fully mature, while the Quevedo is very (very) young. It's difficult...

Re: Fonseca 1963, 1966, 1970, 1985, and also 1977 and 1994

I actually split fairly evenly for the big 3 across these vintages. 1963: Fonseca, Graham, Taylor. 1966: Taylor, Graham, Fonseca. 1970: Graham and Taylor in that order but practically tied, followed by Fonseca. 1977: Fonseca is the clear winner, followed by Taylor and Graham in that order but practi...
