15 July 2010 - Blind Tasting of 1970 vintage port

Do we have a London offline planned yet for July? I know it's getting a bit hot for port by then, but I'd be interested. If we can find a date that works, would anyone else be interested?

Everything sounds fine to me. Could you give us a rough idea of the cost of adopting a bottle, please.

Re: Latest buy

2004 Quinta de Romaneira I actually know very little about this house, but when I read AHB's note and saw the price ($20), I jumped on six as cellar defenders. Thank you AHB and TPF for helping me score what should be an excellent value. Purple and opaque. Very open blueberry nose. Sweet and fruity...

Age profile of my port

Every now and then, usually when I can't drink from my cellar for some reason, I like to look at some of the statistics for the bottles that I have to enjoy in the future. This time, I was curious to know what sort of age profile the bottles had since I have in mind that I am trying to buy port from...

Re: Earliest foil capsules

There is a reference in the Barchester Chronicles to one of the characters in the mid- late 19th century reaching for "the bottle with the green foil" meaning a bottle of Taylor port.

An excellent result. I think the Bell at Christmas would be the perfect time to open one of these.

Re: Corked & Cling Film

There are two types of Cling Film - polyethylene only or a mix of PVC and polyethylene. From what I understand, this effect of removing TCA requires the pure polyethylene variety for the full effect.

Re: BBR Wine World Cup

While I'm all in favour of having a chance of winning a case of wine worth over £1700, I fear that you need to know something about football to have a chance.

Now if only they had run a similar competition for the Twenty20 World Cup.

Ben

I'm pleased to hear your trip went well. Do we have any new converts to the Joy of Port as a result of what sounds to have been a terrific trip?

Re: 1863 Ferreira vintage port

... did the label say Vintage Port or Garrafeira, because I had this two years ago with Luis Scottomajor, but named Garafeira, since it was bottled in Oporto later than the 2-3 years. Axel It was a bottling by Companhia Agricola, Successora de Dona Antonia A Ferreira and was labelled Garrafeira 1863.

Re: Is '92 the most over-hyped vintage?

There are good reasons that the perceived rule of thumb in the UK for several generations has been that you do not drink vintage port until it reaches the age of maturity - 21at the time the rule became widely accepted. While there may have been exceptions, most vintages show poorly compared to thei...

Re: Closet treasures. Really?

It's funny, because I just was renovating this old cellar on my property here in Virginia and I found some dusty old bottles. The front is engraved "Laffite 1787" and in smaller letters "Th. J". Any idea what this is worth? You should find yourself a good attorney and sue the gu...

Re: 2008 Single Quinta Vintage Port Taylor Fladgate

Does anybody have any early views on this vintage? I'm always a bit dubious about buying port so early on, but I quite like the fact that TFP are doing mixed cases. WS1 - may you tell us where those prices are from? BBR have yet to release anything. Derek and I have some samples to work through. I ...

Tuesday 7th September - Dow Vertical at TCP

So far, at least as my memory tells me, we only have two tasting events planned for the autumn / winter season. These being the "55 @ 55" - which I will start to organise properly when Roy lets me know whether or not he is organising a second week of his harvest tour - and the Christmas Of...

Re: Who Needs To Detox?

I can proudly say that I have joined in this exercise frenzy and have done my bit to match Derek's mountain walking, Glenn's marathon sprinting and Andy's cycling from Los Angeles to Seattle for a port tasting. This afternoon I went to Henley, had tea in Raymond Blanc's spledid tea shop and strolled...

1996 Quinta de Vargellas vintage port

Deep red colour, right into the rim. Marmite on the nose; raisins and rubber. Soft tannins in the mouth, restraied fruit showing some of the beef stock of heat. Good levels of fruit and plenty of interest. Sweet and fruity aftertaste; quite big and with good length. Needs at least another 10 years. ...

1955 Taylor vintage port

Mature, mid-red colour, going rose on the rim. Very off nose, somewhat antiseptic with perhaps some bitter sloes. Quite sweet in the mouth, albeit slightly hollow but a mid-palate belance of damsons and violet drops. Dry, blueberry jelly finish with a dry and tannic length of a good duration. 90/100...

1985 Martinez vintage port

Mid red colour, showing young maturity. Very restrained nose, with nothing much more than some dusty redcurrants. Sweet, balanced and elegant, showing early maturity. Quite dry but with good levels of fruit. Dry finish, with plenty of fruit and a very good length of very good volume. A nice wine - o...

1963 Graham vintage port

Very pale colour, green on the rim and a volatile nose. Weak and aged on the palate showing sweetness, but not much fruit. Believe to have been badly light damaged. Not rated. Poured 26 May 2010.

1976 Fonseca Guimaraens vintage port

First bottle was corked. A young looking wine, deep in colour with an opaque centre and a deeply coloured rim. Chocolate, cherries and damsons on the nose. Silky in texture, young and tannic structure supporting a massive wine with a huge amount going on. Blueberry juice everywhere. Soft and fruity ...

1977 Fonseca vintage port

Looking in colour to be in the early stages of maturity. Mature nose, open and full of maraschino cherry. Sweet and a little simple in the mouth, with candied fruit but no tannins. Very sweet. Soft and lingering aftertaste, although a little short. A port to drink and enjoy over the next 10 years. 9...
