Moses,

The last 2 I've had were not that great, good but not great. I've got one bottle left and I'd be more than happy to bring it out to Boston the next time I come so you can try it.

Re: 1967 Taylors Quinta de Vargellas

I've had 2 or 3 bottles of this in the past year or so and all have been quite hot and like you described. I think its best days are behind it and its time to drink up as they won't get any better.

Re: Recorking old ports

not going to say it has never ever happened...but as a general rule they don't do this. they may recork their own old in-house bottles that have never left their cellars, but they won't recork a bottle that you bring back to them. its also my understanding that fewer and fewer First growth producers...

Re: Tax and Duty Comparisons

Most states only charge sales tax for items bought in a state where you are physically at. If you buy it over the phone and have it shipped, then there is no tax as you are not physically buying it in the state (makes no sense, huh?). Some states do charge sales tax no matter what and some don't. My...

Re: Tax and Duty Comparisons

jacob, In the US tax rates vary by county (a small area within a state). In Los Angeles County it is 8.25% and if I drive a few miles down the road to Orange County it is only 7.75% Luckily I buy most of my stuff in the OC :) However, generally if I buy from a retaler outside the state of California...

Re: Always wanted to own a port company?

It has become very popular here in the States for wine producers to produce a "dessert" wine. Usually they are just late harvest Zinfandels that have 17ish % ABV. Think of a super jammy and ripe zin and you got the idea. Not really my cup of tea, but some people love these things  Th...

probably the best program out there is called Cellar Tracker, its free or you can pay a little and get wine critics reviews. I think it is now the single largest database for peoples TN's inthe world. I've used it for several years and love it.

Re: Cockburn Decanting Times

We do all the youngsters in the afternoon as planned followed by an early(ish) dinner. We then pop the old ports one at a time and taste them, leaving some in the glass for later. We then pass out the middle-aged stuff which will have been decanted pre-dinner and return to the oldies at the end of ...

Re: Cockburn Decanting Times

An idea...how about a 15 or so minute break before diving into the last 5-6 bottles. We do the young flight, then our already planned break, then the first set of older VPs, then a very short break to let everyone stretch their legs, let the palates take a break, and get the old ones decanted and po...

Re: Always wanted to own a port company?

Yes you can. But in the wine business it is the cheap stuff that is the actual money maker. The higher end stuff requires a lot of annual recuring expenses, whereas the cheap stuff doesn't because its massed produced as cheaply as possible to maximize profits.

The least impressive lots of Ruby are not going to sell for a price that covers the cost of production; indeed I would not be surprised if all Rubies are inherently unprofitable, and that the better returns on the reserves, tawnies and special categories are needed to compensate. If people have been buying Quintas in the belief that they would increase in value (irrespective of their ability to turn a profit) then we may see some interesting distressed sales. The young ones there is no issue opening them early. The older ones (1935 and older) should be opened as close to the tasting as possible. That way they can evolve in the glass as sometimes really old ones hit their peak relatively early. If not, then they can evolve in the glass or decanter. This m...
