I think 22 hours is a good start. Although this is good with minimal decanting, it really gets going after a day open.

If I'm not mistaken, Joao Nicolau De Almeida is the wine maker at Ramos Pinto. The first person to do single varietial VP's.

I agree and those old labels were really thin and brittle. They look as though they were damaged being put in and take out of a wine storage racking. They look good to me from the pics.

Rozes has also been trying to break into the US market recently. Their unfiltered LBVs can be quite good, and the 1994 is just now starting to come together into a really nice bottle. Their VPs are still not up to par and Axel is spot on with his comments here... The LBVs are on the top end of the p...

Presidential is the US (and I think Germany too) export name for Dalva. They are the same wines, just a different label for a different market. Why that is, I have no idea, but the two are one-in-the-same. That being said, I've not had that particular vintage but can say that Dalva/Presidential isn'...

Very cool..thanks guys.

As for the mysterious Port...I think I mentioned the only other long-named "C" brand back then that I know of was Constantinos (which the grapes were from Quinta do Crasto). So I would guess it was one of the two...but we'll find out in a few months.

Andy, bring boots and good socks - we can kit you out with the other stuff when you get here. There was an image which flashed across my mind which I really, really do not want repeated. What happens on the Munro stays on the Munro - wipe it from your mind and never speak of it again :? Momentarily...

Bottle Shock

Admin2 Note: Split from the thread in the following link. I used to be slightly paranoid (yes, hard to believe isn't it) about "bits" getting into the decanter or my glass. I thought of these particles as some sort of dirty contaminating substance that had to be completely eliminated in o...

I've heard mixed reviews about this, most not favorable. I've only had it once earlier this year and the bottle was decent. the major drawback was the heat on it, which never did totally integrate. The rest of your note was pretty close to being spot on with mine.

Jacob has a good point and one I never thought about before. Coffee filters generally allow a little bit of fine particulate through (checked our pot at work today). I still prefer using unbleached cheesecloth. Its cheap, easy to transport, and if absolutely needed can be rinsed out and reused.

What would you define as "really old ones"?
I would say anything about 40-50+ years old.
