Re: 1998 Sainsburys TTD

I noticed this new vintage on the shelf a few days ago but passed. I bought a couple of their 1999 last Christmas and regretted it. Thanks for the note, added to my resolution to restrain myself, but sorry it was not good.

Re: Tue 05 May 2015, Boot & Flogger, Fonseca

Biggest surprise for me was that the Lame Duck '75 defied all known medical science by rising to its feet and waddling off. Though light in weight it was tasty. The '83 didn't, I feel, show as well as it could, and certainly fell well short of the excellent '85. Even so, given the miracle of the '75...

Re: Tue 05 May 2015, Boot & Flogger, Fonseca

why is Phil the only one drinking? Curious. Yet drinking happened, as evidenced by the many empty glasses (particularly of the first especially delicious flight). In my case more than sufficient drinking that I passed on the opportunity of the BFT the day after - my brain was willing but my body th...

Single '85 decanted. Seems OK. Tiny bit broke off bottom cork. Gritty sediment. Looks dark. Smell closed. Dregs fruity plummy tasty. So far so good.

Re: Arsenic and lead in old wine

Arsenic consumed is methylated by the body (turned into an organic and safer form) and excreted safely. Gradually increase the dose and the body's methylating mechanism keeps up. Big sudden dose overloads and death nasty. Lots of bleeding. Arsenic doesn't cause cancer in itself, but will increase ca...

Re: Did this every happen to you?

Thanks. 3 months is longer than I expected, particularly for an older port. I've done similar for a week or so, and been happy enough. Knowing it will keep a little longer gives the flexibility to open something else. I'll give longer a go and see what happens.

Re: Did this every happen to you?

Delightful. Pure indulgence. It may only be a half, but another may be found having also been similarly saved, should the need arise.

How long do you feel these rebottled resealed portions are able to be stored before they become past their best?

2005 Munsterer Rheinberg Riesling Spatlese Gottelman

While generally I find Majestic Wine no where near as interesting as they used to be, they do one off web parcels occasionally which look worth a punt - this currently £58.44 for 6.

Re: Latest buy

Incidentally I have a theory that some of the rather stewed bottles which have appeared in the tasting notes are as a result of shoddy handling in the supply chain. I'm pretty sure you are right. I shudder to think of pallets of wine cooking in the hot sun waiting to be offloaded/moved by highly tr...

Re: Latest buy

Just nipped into Tesco and saw they had their 25% offer on, bought four bottles of 1994 BOB and two 2003 Vau and all for a hundred quid. I've never tried the Vau 2003 - is it any good? My local Tesco store has started stocking the BOB 1997 rather than the 1994. I've no idea as I have never had it e...

Re: Tues 5 May, The Best of the Fonseca Bicentennial Tasting

I would like to come please if there is still space (or go on a reserve list if not!). I would have to adopt though as the only Fonseca I have suitable for this august list is 1985, and this is already spoken for, unless another bottle is required. It is of course difficult to imagine a surfeit of F...

Re: Tappit hen

Weird. I read a recent tasting note on a bottle of 1992 Fonseca that was consumed in the Boot and Flogger and had been donated by Stephen Eggins. I remembered the thread from a couple of years ago where Stephen was wanting to very generously donate said bottle, and that he had been in a Port society...

I came across this Nautical Archaeology paper on Scottish pewter - The early evolution of the Tappit Hen. Contains much already discussed, and a little extra. This area, incidentally, has excellent diving, the nearby Hispania wreck and Falls of Lora drift are both great fun.

I realise your heart is probably set on Fonseca coloured wire, but you could consider, if pursuing the unpainted route, of perhaps changing the colour to one less obvious or more decorative - transparent plastic coated wire?

Re: Smith Woodhouse 1997 & Sundries

I assume that you have read this ? The Smith Woodhouse won't fetch much selling them, the others perhaps a bit more (although the 75 is probably not of interest to me) - the usual advise is for the seller to reconsider and drink them or give to friends - are you sure that this is not a better option...
