Opened another one this Christmas: not much to add to the previous TN. Some secondary flavours are coming; it seemed a bit more earthy than my previous tasting of this VP, but still young. 89 points seem to be about right for now.

I think it'll be a Dow '88 Bomfim on the 25th and a 375 of the '89 on the 26th. The 29th I'm attending a VP-tasting and I'll be bringing a Churchill '91.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Offley '63 last week - drinking very well. Sandeman '63 should make for a nice pairing.
Skip the 85's: Burmester suffers from VA and Noval '85 is lacklustre and boring.
I'd love to see a TN on the Dow '66!

Tom, I would use lab-grade alcohol for sterilising your corks, not a sulpher solution.

I was actually rather amazed at the decisiveness with which you (almost) nailed this Port! The conversation went something like this: (Snifffff) - (Snifffff) It's a bit...green, isn't it? - Celery! Kopke? - Yes...or perhaps Crasto? Either one..but young. - Very young: 03 or 04. It was a nice VP for ...

Looking forward to it...I will miss the (pre-)Christmas dinner of the company I work for because of this offline, but if I have to choose between a party with or without Port: easy! See you all soon! 88)

I didn't have a specific incident, it was an accumulation of tastings, mostly in the company of Stevie, Ronnie and Maartje. I never realised we were such pushers, but come to think of it - indeed we are! For me it was spending an internship at UTAD in Vila Real, at the border of the Douro and havin...

1997 Sandeman VP

1997 Sandeman VP â€‟ not the Vau. Nose: closed. Palate: well structured, thick, with a backbone of very ripe fruit. Good finish, tannic.
This Port seemed to be almost completely closed to me. Revisit in 5 years.

1995 Ferreira VP

1995 Ferreira VP â€‟ now this smells young. I mean, REALLY young. The palate is not much different: full, rich and primairy. A good balance, but also a bit “angular†, if you know what I mean. Supple finish with yummy red cherries, lingering and warm. I was impressed â€‟ really impressed â€‟ wit...

1994 Offley

1994 Offley VP â€‟ wow, this smells minty…odd. Some dark fruit aromas, but it’s mostly mint, mint and mint again. Well structured, good balance, juicy red fruit if a tad medicinal. The finish was a let-down, though: very, very sweet with artificial fruit candy flavours lingering on. I did not like...

1989 Gran Cruz VP

1989 Gran Cruz VP â€‟ what fun to see this wine in the line-up! I was very interested to find out how this would taste after the stories of the Crusting Pipe offline. I did not find the nose that enchanting â€‟ it did not give much. Supple bodied, nice structure, but a bit medicinal tasting. A sl...

1985 Pocas

1985 Poças VP â€‟ a pleasant surprise! Licorice on the nose, with still some fresh red fruit. Almost fresh. Medium bodied, bordering the full. Spicy and smokey, with a hint of dades. Smooth caramel on the nice finish. Good wine, drinking very well now, but capable of additional aging.

1977 Calem VP

1977 Calem VP this looks old: pale tawny. Not a very expressive nose, light dried fruit aromas and caramel. Light bodied, sweet, with fig and rasin flavours. Long finish, unfortunately sharpish sweet, almost burning. Should have been drunk at least 5 years earlier.
