Re: New Style
Changes: • The header typeface specification repaired, such that browsers other than Firefox now will (or at least, are more likely to) render “ ThePortForum.com † in Palatino. Reports of success or failure welcomed. • Body text now should be in your browsers default typeface — which is controlled...

Fabulous. Having checked, my only Ferreira is a 1977, which, of course, is at the service of the team.

Re: ’83 and ’85 Double-horizontal, Sat 13 Sept ’08, Brooklyn
In all five houses I preferred the ’85. Most males present agreed, with scores averaging 4-1. (The ladies preferred the ’83s.) In all five houses ’85 had better fruit than ’83, and the spirit was more overt in the ’83.
It is always fabulous to see one’s prejudices reaffirmed. Hurray!

Re: 1985 Fonseca
Fonseca 1985: this port was just like Fonseca 1985. And this was odd, because, you know, / They hadn't any feet. To behold, black. Nose and mouth: huge cloying sticky sweetness. Delicious delicious, but — in the largest writing on my tasting notes, “Wait!†.

Re: 1983 Fonseca
Fonseca 1983: darkish translucent red. Nosing of coffee, plums, cherries, and ED rightly said cinnamon. Soft to the mouth, with some heat, and great length. At its plateau: no need to wait longer. Enjoy your stocks of F83 over the next decade.

Re: 1985 Graham’s
Graham 1985 : Dark red. Nosing of molasses. In particular I was reminded of the molasses present in a 40-year-old Springbank that had been aged in an old Bourbon cask. (Astonishingly, some people said that this description was not helpful.) To taste, sweet dark fruit, a little light alcohol, pepper...

Re: 1983 Graham’s
Graham 1983: Dark translucent red, nosing of sweetness — oh sweetness! — and black fruit. Likewise to taste, though somewhat softer and blander than the ’85, though very obviously its sibling.

Re: 1985 Dow
Dow 1985: translucent, and slightly lighter than brick red, with, to smell, far more fruit than the D83. Red fruit, maybe cherry and strawberry. But very dry to taste, very tannic, the same red fruits, great length. Very good, if one likes Dow’s drier style.

Re: 1983 Dow
Dow 1983: Cloudy purple, with a light nose, JES rightly finding lemon. Medium-light, hot, short, dry, dull.
Not obviously the same as Eric’s experience.

Re: 1985 Nacional
Nacional 1985: Great brick red. Vegetable nose (and I don’t like vegetables). DC suggested play-do. To taste lots of tannin, little fruit, no finish.
Later it was a changed port, with a very strong candy-like sweetness, though still short.

Re: 1983 Nacional
Quinta do Noval Nacional 1983 : acquired by Eric directly from the Quinta a few years previously. Mid-red, and smelling of passion fruit (which some people called eucalyptus) and something less nice, celery being the most plausible description. Also, perhaps, some citrus like orange peel. Perhaps. ...

Re: 1985 Gould Campbell
Gould Campbell 1985: translucent red, lighter than the GC83. Nosing of pepper, jalapeño, and lovely spice, which re-appeared in the taste with solid tannic structure and good length. Much better than its older sibling.

Re: 1983 Gould Campbell
Gould Campbell 1983: cloudy and dark, shifting to purple at the edge. Nose initially spirit, then black cherry. The taste for me spoilt by a bitterness throughout the palate, with more heat later.

Re: Wine shippers
The weight argument has persuaded me that a semi-custom suitcase wouldn’t be clever.
And as Jay had an idle whole-case polystyrene shipper, he has donated it to me. Problem solved, as well as it can be.
