Re: 2009 Vintage Port Declarations and Predictions

In the late 1980s the rules changed, permitting shipping from the Douro rather than from Gaia, which has hugely increased the number of ‟smaller shippers and independent quintas”. Julian, actually the regulations changed in 1986, not the late 1980's that allowed for the producers to bottle, promot...

This is something EVERY Port lover should see!

Amazing archival footage saved and reworked by the IVV. It is in Portuguese but that doesn't matter!

Re: 2008 Taylors Vargellas

It is released here, although here at the moment is Vancouver, BC. I had it TV08 yesterday. I've not seen it for sale in the USA though I know it is available and Adrian said yesterday, they'll be deciding on their 2009 VPs when they get back to Portugal.

Re: Forrester’s Map of the Wine District

Jacob, Very nice work! Should you ever look for a prominent place to park this, (preferably the full map version) I'd be happy to provide the space, attribution of course and kick it off by featuring it and you, in a newsletter. It would have to be something that would pass muster w/ copyright laws....

Re: Twice smitted?

In terms of the 4th tier/plank - I had a similar thought as did Alex except with pipes instead of bottles. On a ship, stacking pipes in the hold was fraught with peril during storms and a plank to help secure the 4th tier might have been used to prevent pipes from toppling. As to "once" or...

Josh, Here is my tasting note from a few years ago on Qta do Ventozelo: 2005 Quinta do Ventozelo Vintage Port Very dark ruby and full opacity with some fine sediment in the bottom of the bottle. Fragrant floral scents with raspberry, red licorice and grape Lifesavers make for a really bright and exp...

Re: Taylors Scion

Agreed. The possibility certainly exists, that it just may not be known, although you'd think that the people who owned the pipes would have known more about them ... depending on "how" they were discovered. Although the Scion is old, it is not the oldest example of Colheita being found ac...

Re: Taylors Scion

It was a very good Port. I am not sure why folks here are doubting the claims of TFP. Would they risk their centuries old reputation with the chance of a scandal if this was to be proved false. I think not. Having one of those empty test tubes and boxes ... I can attest that the wine was in great co...

1992 Taylor & Fonseca (WA)

A friend sent me this, from the guy who reviews wines and Port for the Wine Advocate. It was posted on one of the wine bulletin boards, I can only assume on Squires' but don't know for sure. Your thoughts on the ratings? TNs: 1992 Fonseca and 1992 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Ports ----------------------...

Re: How to sell vintage port?

Howard, Given that it was an investment, liquid assets per se, selling is always an option ... however, has your son considered saving these Ports until he is older and then drinking them himself with friends and/or loved ones on significant occasions throughout his life? Someday he might even like ...

Re: 1955 Mackenzie

Every once in awhile, a company may get "it" right. Mackenzie possibly did in 1955. And speaking of going bust, great Port houses like Graham's, Cockburn's, Sandeman and so many others have also run into financial difficulties requiring them to go out of business or sell their family compa...

Re: 1955 Mackenzie

I realize I am in the minority here but since when has that mattered? Odd, I have had ex-cellars bottles of 1900 Taylor and several bottles of 1931 Noval (reg. bottling) and the Nacional too ... all are older ... and all were at least as youthful looking. I've had some 1945s too that were purplish-r...
