Re: 1990 Quinta de la Rosa LBV

Rs90 LBV . Oh dear. Or, in the delightful modern parlance as used by my youngest, oh my days! Orange, 10% opaque. Nose of light varnish. If it is not framed as a red port, but instead as a sauternes-sherry mix, it could be drunk with pleasure. It was possible to pretend that it was a very very ligh...

SW84 LBV. Light red, 25% opaque. Far past prime, dry, some red cherry remaining.

With time it improved in the glass, but still, far past prime.

Re: 1982 Warre LBV (unfiltered)

W82 LBV. Dark dark red, 80% opaque — again, an excellent colour for a VP of its age. Big, a hint of Tayloresque roughness, drier than the other Warres, and brighter. The brightness also manifested itself as being slightly lighter. I gave it third place; the people agreed with me; justice was done.

W81 LBV. Dark dark red, 60% opaque — an excellent colour for a VP of its age. Wonderful, so soft, so very long, VP-grade red-fruited Port that could be Dow 1970. I gave it first; it came first-equal; justice was almost done — it was the best at the table.

W79 LBV. Dark red, 60% opaque — an excellent colour for a VP of its age. Soft old Port, very long, with lots of red cherry and plum fruit, and a sharp bitterness (good bitterness) throughout. I gave it second; it came first-equal; justice was done.

Re: Aged LBVs, 5 March 2024

Very interesting, and a stunning result for Warre. I thought the W81 LBV was the clear winner (could have been blind-guessed to be a D70 full Vintage), but others supported the ’79, and a score-draw felt like a fair reflection of the discussion. Well that was a remarkable tasting. I am not sure we h...

Placemats updated.

My preference would be not to Audouze, but to open and decant on the morning. Is there an official decanting request?

Yes, and no. Somehow the 1986 has been ‘stolen’, so I am bringing for me and for BP adoption, the 1981 and 1982. (The 1984 has not been stolen, but has been promised to Harry, so off-limits.)

Placemats: please could the organiser select which of the offered Ports are to be tasted. Placemats are traditionally slightly traditional, in that they at least echo previous precedent for the theme. So: Jan 2021 — could reuse the font /GothamNarrow-Bold ; Mar 2018 — not much liked; Apr 2013 — inco...
