Re: Fiftieth Anniversary - Wednesday 19th May
Ports: we need a policy decision. Is this a near-complete 1960; or is this a one-bottle-each 1960? This is a school night. We have a reservation from 6½pm. So, unless there is a manifest consensus to the contrary, and that consensus materialises by the end of this week, I declare this to be a one-b...

Re: May 5, 6 or 7
Of course, this all assumes that Irish airspace is open... Seriously, if you do decide to take the $50 Ryanair flight there are very good train services from Gatwick, Stansted and Luton airports costing in the order of $30 each way. Once in London the tube will cost about $6 each way. If you need to...

Placemats would be most welcome. Thank you. Attendees will be Mark, Chris Doty and me. Venue will be The Crusting Pipe at 6:30pm on Thursday May 6. Each person attending will bring a bottle of vintage port (which also permits single quinta and second label vintage ports) which will be presented blin...

Not at the moment since Tom will be offering some bottles for adoption. I'll try and check with Tom tomorrow.

My opportunities to travel to Germany are quite limited these days, but I'm interested as a possibility. What would be the nearest airport for Leverkusen?

I declare that 3 of us (Mark, Chris and me) to be a sufficient number to make an offline.
Any preference as to venue? Crusting Pipe at 6:30pm? Blind bottles or declared bottles with bottles to be of vintage port from the year when there was a general election in the UK?

Re: A Burmester experiment?
I have found a Burmester 85 and Burmester 80 at approximately $50 ea. in a small store near me. Does this seem a reasonable price to pay for what might be a mediocre wine (but an interesting experiment)? Or should I just get something better? Other unusual things found: Niepoort 92 ($70), Niepoort ...

Re: Port Decanters - what shape is best?
I would like to do an experiment with a 6 pack of something nice - let's say Vesuvio 1994 or similar. Six port geeks meet in a convenient location. One of them, appropriately financially compensated by the other five, arrives with six bottles of the same wine from the same case that have each been ...

Re: Port Decanters - what shape is best?
That bottle that was open for 3 days.... do you just leave it in the decanter with the stopper (assuming you have a stopper) for the entire period of time? Do you pour back into the orig bottle. The only decanter I have with a stopper, has a glass one. and is not 100% air tight, I'm guessing 3 days...

Re: 1983 Warre
9 days later This rather puts paid to the myth that you have to drink vintage port within a day or two of opening it. I have kept a half bottle of the 1983 at 12C for the last week that was liberated from Sussex and am drinking it tonight. It is darkly coloured, full of sweet blackberries on the no...

Re: 1890 AJ da Silva colheita port
For the purposes of the TN indexes, is ‟AJ da Silva” sufficiently close to ‟Dalva (aka Presidential, aka C da Silva)” for that to be used? Totally different companies as AJ S da Silva is what is presently known as Quinta do Noval. I assume he forgot the "S" in the title as I've never se...

Re: 1989 Quinta do Vesuvio
I still have a few of these purchased early on, what do you believe to be the drinkability of these moving forward, in terms of longevity or lack thereof? While ready now and drinking very nicely, I believe that the Douro bake is integrating itself into the flavour profile of the wine and is becomi...

Re: 2007 Niepoort Pisca vintage port
Given the interest in this note, I should make it clear that this was a snapshot tasting note, and not one which had the benefit of extended retasting over a number of days. I'm quite happy to find out in later years (or even months) that this bottle was atypical or that my taste-buds had been exhau...

Re: 1995 Qunita do Vesuvio
Almost as deep in colour as the 1994, but with a slightly transparent edge. Chocolate on the nose, with a touch of alcohol showing through - dusty and slightly harsh. Tannins and acidity dominate initially in the mouth but with a fruit presence; lacking in balance but with promising development. Hea...

2004 Quinta do Infantado vintage port
Solid red centre, transparent on the rim. Hugely herbaceous nose, some blueberry mixed with sage. Sweet entry, showing sweet damsons; very tannic with quite a grip. Nice development. Empty aftertaste other than some cheek tingling sensation, although some flavours do develop on the finish. Adequate ...

1997 Quinta da Foz vintage port
Very light colour, pink! Certainly not the colour of a typical 1997. Sweet red licorice on a fragrant nose. Sweet entry, red licorice again with masses of cherry juice and soft milk chocolate tannins. Very forward, mature and very tasty. Gentle and tasty aftertaste. Very advanced and very drinkable....

2007 Calem vintage port
Snapshot tasting note. Deep red colour, young but with no purple. Vigorous and fresh nose of vibrant fruit. Sweet entry, full of fruit; good levels of acidity and soft tannins. Lots of fruit in the mix, good complexity. Elegance and finesse, not a blockbuster but with lovely balance. Nice drinking i...

2000 Barros vintage port
Light rim, transparent centre. Quite empty on the nose. Sweet into the mouth but with good tannins drying out the secondary palate. Some bitterness in the mid-palate. The aftertaste is of sweet raspberry jam. Not a great vintage port - perhaps disjointed through being closed. 92/100. Tasted 19 April...

1997 Barros vintage port
Developed colour, darker than the 1997 Foz shown alongside. Some orange on the rim. Sweet raspberry and cinnamon on the nose. Soft and sweet in the mouth, a little thin in texture. Dry tannins dominate at the moment in the mid palate but the sweet fruit shows through well. Elegant and sweet. Pleasan...

2007 Quinta da Romaneira
Snapshot tasting note. Purple-red in colour. Lavender and blueberries on the nose. Sweet fruity impact. Soft tannins grip well but with finesse while huge levels of fruit build up. Big aftertaste. This wine is showing very well, allowing the sweet fruit to dominate. Probably a 20 year port. 89/100. ...

Deep red, showing some bricking on the rim. Little on the nose. Dry entry, tannins dominate from the start. Texture is thin, a little watery. Mature fruit flavours come through well in the mid-palate. Gentle aftertaste, not showing much. Drink over the next 10 years. 85/100. Tasted 19 April 2010.
