Dorothy Sayers again in "Busman's honeymoon" (not one of her strongest) has Bunter, Wimsey's valet exploding with rage when Mrs Ruddle washes and stands upright two and a half dozen of the Cockburn '96. The horror. Just for variation I am looking into a reference in Raymond Chandler's &qu...

2003 Sainsbury

I thought I should open another one of these which I bought at Christmas, the previous bottle being noted here purely in the spirit of investigation. Having had about a month to settle this was different from the previous one in the sense that it was less dense in colour, had a similar nose but had ...

2003 Sainsbury

Opened and drunk without much ceremony. I let it breathe for a few hours and did not notice much change in it over the 2 days I drank this one. Very dark in colour, black at the centre and notably dark at the rim, looking almost poorly decanted, but I was careful about this so I think it is a featur...

Re: The Port Forum Port Bucket List

From memory, reported that the grapes were 1868, but for reasons of stubbornness marketed as 1869 (perhaps also Martinez '69). But both years of Croft were seen at auction. I might reference one J Wiseman; HENRY. Cockburn '69. Sixty-nine?! Faked by Croft; produced by none other (I scorn your sole r...

*label bias klaxon* Are you sure this is 99 points? Is it possible that you have upped your score a teeny bit on account of your amazement at finding a delicious old port with none of the usual limitations of decrepitude? Or perhaps the setting and guests may have influenced you? I have considered t...

I managed to open 2 bottles of this over the Christmas period without anyone singing Chitty Chitty bang bang to me. But Casino Royale was on when I opened one of them, so perhaps Ian Fleming was looking down on me.

As the old year has drawn to a close I have decided to share my cellar stats having enjoyed this thread and the stats that you have all shared. So here goes:- As at 1st Jan 2017 my cellar is made up of 74% port 18% Bordeaux 3% Rhone 3% Burgundy 2% Italy Of the port 87% is Vintage (includes Vesuvio ...

Now that peace has been restored to this thread I would like to add a worry of my own about 'wine owners'. It's that bloke in the blue scarf. Has he been thrown out of the palatial pile he is pictured in front of with only a glass of wine for company? Is life really that bad? Or am l to surmise that...

I should like to add my congratulation on the foresight of your uncle and your own good luck of having such a relative. Also search his cellar for any Foseca 77 and claim it for your own. I hope you liked the port.

Re: Port for laying down - 2010, 2013

I have reason, also, to lay down port from 2010 and 2013, but likewise found the pickings scarce. As I didn't buy it "on release," I'm waiting a bit to see how things evolve before buying some bottles. As you don't have ideal cellaring conditions, and its well past 2012 and 2015 (respecti...

Re: Book or Bottle Holiday Present Suggestion

I don't know the wine merchants of Boston, but my advice would be find a well established and reputed one and take their advice about a bottle or two. I have almost always found good merchants know and care about what they supply. They can often point out where the value lies on their list.

2011 Sandeman LBV

A very large tumultuous sort of wine. Everything present to excess, fruit, tannin acidity and alcohol. Rather too unresolved to give a clear indication of future development, but there certainly is an upside. Astounding value for money if you have the patience to wait but overwhelming and a bit sham...

Lovely post, I have enjoyed mulling it over with a glass or two of Sandeman 2011 LBV (on offer at a tad over a tenner at Waitrose btw). I had some thoughts on your thoughts as follows: Please don't be wary of posting your notes. It is very helpful to look at a range of notes across time when thinkin...

Re: Warre Vintage Port 70s and 80s bottle variation?

I have drunk a fair amount of the Warre 85 and it has shown quite a lot of variation. No actual duds but some decidedly browner and thinner specimens. The Warre 80 I have drunk many times with hardly any variation. I think I have tried the 83 just once and thought it like a lot of 83s, rather dour, ...

There is a discussion of this here.

I think that there are other mentions of this port having been 'cooked', I mean no disrespect to the wine by this, if it is good, it is good.

What a lovely port to open on Bonfire Night. And what a treat for yourself. A very lovely port, just finishing the last splash now. A bit simpler than when first opened but with the same effortless quality. Rather different from most 66s, which always seemed rather tumultuous ports. It has bought m...

Clear lively colour, pinks and reds rather than brown. Pale rim, which does have a bit of brown in it. On opening the nose was fruity, this has changed to something more tertiary, whiskey, maple and madeira. Beautiful clear palate with a sense of layers. Amazingly rich and thick mouthfeel for such a...
