Re: 15 December 2011 - The Unknown Shipper at the Bell?

Attendee list updated to include Rob and Cookie. The decision on numbers should be Tom's rather than mine since Tom makes the arrangements. However, I suggest that further volunteers wishing to drink fine port from the unknown shipper should continue to put their names forward and be placed on the w...

1991 Churchill's vintage port

Mid red colour, some early maturity on the rim. Nosing of slightly rotten fruit and quite spirity. Smooth in the mouth, gently tannic and giving the impression of over-ripe fruit. More tannic than I remember from previous bottles. Chewy aftertaste, dark chocolate finish of good length. Better than I...

Re: 2009 Cockburn Quinta dos Canais

500 cases made. Cask sample. Fresh violets on the nose. Sweet fruit on entry with generous levels of fruit on the palate, an acidic structure and light tannins that together add up to a medium-bodied baby port. Comes with a gentle aftertaste that leads to a long, big, black pepper finish and lots of...

Re: 1999 Cockburn Quinta dos Canais SQVP

Mild red colour, 100% opaque. Strange, petrolly nose; perhaps VA tones mixed in with the fruit? Light bodied and tasting of lightly baked fruit. The tannins melt away quickly to leave a baked cherry flavour. Enjoyable but light. Light fruit finish of good length. The first impression is of a light p...

Re: 2009 Dow Bomfim

Cask sample. Floral nose, clearly young port. Elegant fruit with great purity of flavour, sweet and ripe. Tannins are soft and resolve quickly leaving huge levels of fruit. A lovely, chewy finish of great length; so much fruit. Wonderful. 89-91.

Re: 1999 Dow Quinta do Bomfim SQVP

Solid centre with a touch of maturity. Nose is surprisingly mature for a relatively young wine, full of attractive fruit. Fruit forward entry, medium-bodied and with tannins that show up after the fruit to take a firm grip. Very tannic for the level of maturity of the fruit. Big finish of fruit cake...

2006 Peter Bayly Cape Vintage

Peter Bayly Cape Vintage 2006, Calitzdorp, South Africa. Deep red and opaque colour. Subdued nose with some stewed red plum. Silky entry, gentle red fruit before the tannins show gently through; lovely fruit and texture. Very much a fruit forward wine, lovely to drink now and for a few years to come...

Re: NV Barros LBV

I have this recorded as the 2005 Barros LBV, bottled in 2011. I would suggest changing both the title of this thread and also in the first post of the review thread. Bottled 2011. Very dark in colour, an opaque red. Quite closed on the nose. Restrained entry, big tannins and modest fruit - the balan...

Re: 2000 Barros Vintage

95% opaque centre, just starting to change colour on the rim. Lovely and open on the nose, softly fruity. Silky texture on the palate with lovely fruit and a good balance which has been missing from other Barros wines on show today. The flavours and complexity grows really well with violets all over...

From a rewaxed bottle, with a mid-shoulder fill. Deep ochre in colour, clearly mature, 40% opaque. A nose of orange and marzipan. Thick texture, full bodied and rich on the palate; nutmeg and cinnamon over a deep, sweet grapefruit acidity. Big aftertaste of black treacle and burnt sugar. Delicious t...

A half bottle, that had been decanted from a full bottle in September 2009, corked and waxed before being stored in the wine cabinet. A deep red, showing little signs of maturity and still 90% opaque. Very fragrant nose, full of blackcurrant and a streak of lavender. Masses of fruit on the palate, s...

Cask sample. Lovely sweet blackcurrant on the nose. Dry in the mouth, tannic but with restrained sweet fruit - modest at first but which grows well to great levels. Ex-cellars. Youthful red, showing a little maturity; 90% opaque. Big on the nose, perfumed and expressive - lots of fruit coming out of the glass. Fruity, but in a refined way; big in flavour but medium bodied - full of strawberries and jelly. The fruit grows bigger on the palate. Tannins are resolv...
