Re: Place holder for June 6/7th Vintage with an '8' theme.

Sorry chaps - I am having my second knee operation on 21 May so will still be immobile and, more significantly, in an alcohol-free state when this tasting happens. My knee operation has been delayed due to my current employment status. Am I still in or on a wait list? You look like you never came o...

Re: Tues Dec 11th 2018 - An Offley vertical

I’ve reserved the Boot & Flogger ’s Red Room. AHB will want a seat. First post amended. Yes please. I would have brought the 1830 but I drank it last night whilst watching the Eurovision pre-event show. Instead I'll offer the 1963. Or (underlined for JDAW's attention) I could offer a 2000 if we wan...

Re: Recommendations for travel to the Douro in late June

If you've not stayed in Oporto before, there are plenty of good places to stay and eat which we can recommend.

Other places to stay in the Douro include Tedo (close to DOC) or if going upmarket, Aquapura

Anyone who has a problem finding the right wine can ask Tony or Tom very nicely if there's anything available for adoption...

Nice find on the N58 though, Ian.

Re: 1994; Where's the value?

Interesting to read the strategy for cellaring Port in this thread. I'm sitting on a case of '85 Graham's VP, a half case of '86 Graham's Malvedos VP, and a half case of 2003 Warre's LBV, while drinking what little '66, and '70 I have left. There's various Tawny and '92 Warre's LBV to fill in the g...

I'm definitely in and have just booked a room in town to stay that night. Unless anyone objects vigorously, I will bring a Graham 1897.

I've edited the first post to show that I'll bring the G1897

Chris Appleby will be joining us. He will be bringing a bottle of Sandeman 1970 and wishes to eat the goat's cheese salad and follow that with the rib eye (medium) with a side of beans; and 3 cheeses instead of dessert.

For me please:
No starter, special order bone-in rib-eye (medium rare) with skinny chips and béarnaise sauce, a portion of shallots on the side (although I'll have them with the green beans if I have to).

NV Niepoort VV

A bottle from the original release in the 1960s. Said by Dirk Niepoort to be 50% from the 1863 base wine and 50% to be from a mix of wines ranging from 1900-1950. Dark brown and incredibly intense in colour, 90% opaque. An amazing nose, full of scent. Incredibly intense and multi-layered with treacl...

1858 Valriz

Bottled by the family in 2013, 600 bottles of 50cl were filled and offered for sale. This is bottle 58 of 600. Olive brown centre with a slight green hint on the rim. In contrast to the Niepoort VV served next to this port this was much lighter and paler at 50% opaque and had significant amount of g...

It so happens that I am in London on Thursday night, with a committee meeting starting at 17.00 and running until who knows when. I shall ensure that I am properly prepared in case I am free relatively early and can transfer to the B&F. I've also PMed you an alternative in case only you and I are av...

Re: Vintage Port by retailer in London

The Boot & Flogger is selling Quinta da Silveira 10 Year Old tawny and claims Davy's is the exclusive UK distributor and retail outlet.

As I visit the supermarkets over the next few days I will take a look at what they have in stock at the moment.

Re: Tasting

I agree with DRT. While I do try to identify what the wine tastes like, what is more important to me is how enjoyable it is to drink. But I disagree with DRT that a blackberry tastes like a blackberry. Some blackberries are sweet and delicious and I enjoy eating them. Some are small hard and sour an...

Re: Taylor's LBV

We're convinced of the merits of ageing LBV beyond its normal parameters. I have a case or two of Croft 2004 LBV in half bottles that was sold very cheaply in 2009-10 by one of the UK supermarkets. While now starting to show its age, I still enjoy these. In addition, we occasionally come across auct...

Re: Second wind for 1963s? Tuesday 10 April 2018

With RLC and KMH unable to attend, we are now 13 ports for 12 people. Despite the heroics of the 1922 Committee last Tuesday and their desperate thirst, are we happy that this is the right number of bottles for a school night? Should we be opening both the Dow and the McKenzie?

Re: Second wind for 1963s? Tuesday 10 April 2018

The telepathy was correct. I can (easily) offer Dow, Mackenzie, Martinez or Sandeman. I could dig something else out of storage if necessary. Is this still an adoptive option? Unfortunately not. I will not be at home between now and Tuesday night. Perhaps Tom might have an S63 you could adopt?

Personally speaking... I like the purity of the theme 2008, 1998, 1988, 1978, 1968, 1958, 1948, 1938, 1908, 1899, 1898, 1897, 1896... (which was the original intention). I can fill most of the years if necessary (except 1908)
I can bring an 1897 that I've been looking for an excuse to open.

I should also remark that on the handful of occasions when I have drunk Warre 1922 from a bottle in good condition it has been an amazing port.
Fear not Alex - there are five more bottles, and this was the worst - I guarantee you'll be there again..
